Position Overview

The General Services Employee III performs manual work primarily of a semi-skilled nature but includes some skilled duties of moderate complexity.

Work of this class involves performance of manual tasks of a nature requiring a considerable degree of skills or special knowledge. Assignments may include the use of standard or specialized hand tools, power operated devices, some of the tools of certain skilled trades and other equipment. Assignments may also include the occasional operation of trucks and other automotive or construction equipment incidental to regular duties. Work is normally performed under the direct supervision of a foreman or journeyman level craftsman who issues general or specific orders depending on the assignment. Work results are usually checked for conformance with established standards.

Essential Job Functions

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, May include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

• Acts as lead of crew working independently from the direct supervision of a foreman in carrying out a variety of landscape installation and maintenance jobs.

• Must be familiar with all lawn maintenance equipment.

• Must be able to operate light to medium equipment, i.e. tractor, front end loader, bobcat.

• Must be competent in setting up for special events and be able to work alone.

• Tow heavy trailers (i.e. stage) and set up a PA system properly.

• Performs the more complex semi-skilled work in an equipment repair shop, in parks and recreation areas or other public works.

• Operates tractors, large tractor-type power mowers and loaders; repairs and sharpens edged tools and equipment.

• Performs related work as required.

Must posses required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

• Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.

• Ability to read, write and/or follow oral instructions.

• Ability to use of equipment incidental to assigned tasks.

• Must be familiar with all lawn maintenance equipment.

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and at times under unfavorable weather conditions.

• Ability to communicate effectively with the public.

• Ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with other employees, supervisor and other departments.

Education and Experience

High School graduate or equivalent. Two (2) to three (3) years experience in landscape/irrigation installation and maintenance or in related operations and one year of supervisory experience.

Required Licenses or Certificates

Must possess valid Mississippi driver's license.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Physical requirements involves frequent walking, standing, bending stopping, some unassisted lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects of 50+ pounds and occasionally objects up to 100+ pounds, with the assistance of other employees and/or equipment as appropriate. Requires the ability to speak and signal people to convey or exchange information. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately for manipulating small items, and manual dexterity necessary to operate equipment. Subject. Working conditions are primarily outdoors.
