Charter Communications/Spectrum Principal Engineer II in Greenwood Village, Colorado

JOB SCOPE The Principal Engineer II is a multi-tier operations advanced engineering, design development & solution deployment position. This role is responsible for identifying best practices and establishing Charter standards for the video control and encryption infrastructure involving video services and driving consistent deployment of these design standards across Charter Communications serving area. This role interacts with the Video Design and Engineering, Product, Programming, Video Support Center & other Video Operations Teams. The role is responsible for setting the technical architecture and development direction across a set of internal business applications, leading cross functional technical development teams, delivering business critical projects while maintaining high morale, managing the operational activities in an efficient and professional manner and ensuring all team targets are met as advised by Video Operations leadership
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for engineering activities for operating, maintaining and enhancing the health of Video Operations applications, video control plane and encryption systems to include: Digital Addressable Controller(DAC), RADD's, KLS, BST, SDM, vNC's, OM's, ARPD's, Bulk Encryptors NE3K, all OAM&P CommScope devices. Integrates communication architectures, topologies, hardware, software, transmission and signaling links and protocols into complete network configurations. Provide leadership and ensuring success for testing new firmware, software, and hardware supporting Charter's video solutions. Develop and implement standard processes and method of procedures (MOPs) for upgrading and maintaining Video systems in conjunction with functional, performance, and business requirements provided by product and engineering team Identify, evaluate, select, and deploy new test tools and automation frameworks. Identify and correct monitoring and alerting gaps to prevent outages. Study future technology developments and formulate associated testing strategies. Timely and accurate information and status updates to functional leaders. Provide day to day leadership, mentoring, training and technical guidance to team members. Collaborate on and create scripts with vendors and engineering to help resolve or mitigate platform issues. Collaborate on and create automation with vendors and engineering to improve implementation processes. Ensure projects are accurately estimated and delivered according to schedule. Work with the field on the implementation of video network related projects. Maintain accurate record keeping of system architecture. Perform change work under Change Management guidelines. Provide 24x7 Tier 4.5 triage support by way of on-call rotation. Occasionally work nights and/or weekends as needed - projects and deadlines. Performs other duties as requested by manager.
BASIC / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, and / or equivalent work experience. Minimum (10) years of engineering work experience. Minimum (10) years of video control plane and encryption technologies. Minimum (10) years of project management experience. Minimum (10) years of experience with Unix and Linux operating systems. Minimum (10) years of experience in deployment troubleshooting and providing administration.
Required Job Qualifications Ability to read, write, speak and understand English. Advanced knowledge of related industry specifications and standards IEEE, ANSI, Fiber (Multimode, Single mode, UTP, etc.), Bridging, Switching, Routing, Ethernet and Transport technologies and protocols Advanced knowledge in network design, network architecture, protocols, and network topology Advanced knowledge in TCP/IP and the OSI Model Advanced knowledge in using ticketing and software tools to support the current operations. Advanced knowledge of network devices and basic network appliances Advanced knowledge of network designing software, such as Visio Ability to perform duties in a very fast pace environment and ability to learn new technology quickly Ability to use personal computer and software applications.
ADDITIONAL/PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of ACLs, firewalls, and load balancing; both physical and virtual Knowledge of IGMP, IP unicast, IP multicast, REST API, RPC, VOD, SDV, and JIRA. Knowledge of DNS, DHCP, TFTP, NTP and other critical, service delivery protocols. Experience with Video acquisition, transcoding/encoding, multiplexing, and modulation, using such equipment as: Cisco DCMs, Arris CAP/DM6400 Cherry Pickers, BMRs, BNPs, Harmonic ProStreams and common cable CPE. Advanced knowledge of Video Compression (i.e. MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H264, HEVC, J2K, etc.) and Audio Compression (i.e. Dolby AC3, Dolby Digital Plus, AAC, etc.) Experience with network and element management systems, CISCO (DNCS) and/ or Arris (DAC) video delivery systems. Experience with SDV/VOD design and delivery Advanced troubleshooting skills in (DAC) video delivery and OAM&P devices. Able to effectively lead an outage bridge.
