Job Description Summary

The Controls & Operability team is seeking a controls engineer with demonstrated wind turbine controls expertise. The controls engineer role is a global engineering role where the scope includes design, implementation, and validation of turbine control features that meet product safety, performance and grid compliance. The broad scope of responsibility provides an opportunity to grow control system skills and be part of the team to drive energy transition.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Participate in and lead the development and enhancement of control algorithms that increase turbine performance, lower mechanical loading of the turbine, meet grid compliance requirements and at the same time allow the turbine to run with high availability.

  • Implement and validate control algorithms in both the loads simulation environment as well as on the GE MarkVIe PLC according to the product requirements flow-down

  • Investigate and analyze complex controls issues occurring in the fleet of installed turbines and develop corrective actions.

  • Cooperate with the Loads and Validation teams to analyze the impact of the controls strategy on the mechanical loads of the turbine in simulation and through the evaluation of measurement data

  • Provide key wind turbine controls expertise through all phases of product development from requirements definition through design and development, validation and product life-cycle support

  • Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation and presentation of technical data to internal and external GE customers using reports, records, and letters

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the controller development and loads simulation infrastructure

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science from an accredited University or equivalent knowledge or experience

  • Strong engineering experience

  • Significant wind turbine controls experience

  • Fluency in English

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex/technical information orally and in writing

  • Problem analysis and resolution skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to succeed in a global team environment.

  • Advanced degree (MSc, PhD) with a focus on controls, wind energy, or system dynamics

  • Good understanding of classical (transfer functions, frequency domain design, etc) and modern (state-space, optimal control, etc) control theory

  • Experience with Model-Based design of control systems

  • Experience with state estimation techniques (e.g. EKF)

  • Proficiency in Matlab/Simulink or similar program

  • Experience with real-time control systems such as the GE MarkVIe

  • Ability to code in at least least one programming language such as C or Delphi

  • Wind turbine product knowledge

  • Experience with the grid market including renewable integration and required services

  • Track record of filing Invention Disclosure Letters and patent applications
