Applications will remain on file until May 9, 2025. Responsibilities An opportunity exists for a full-time Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Milo C. Huempfner Outpatient Clinic, located in Green Bay, WI. The Milo C. Huempfner Outpatient Clinic is a new 162,000 square foot VA primary care and multi-specialty clinic located in Green Bay. The successful candidate should be comfortable performing all aspects of adult Orthopaedics. All care will be provided in an outpatient setting only with no inpatient care responsibilities. Qualified candidates should be BE/BC in Orthopaedic Surgery. The selected candidate should demonstrate the ability to work well with a large, diverse and dedicated patient care staff. Duties include, but not limited to: Evaluate general Orthopaedic conditions through complete history and physical examinations, and develop an operative or non-operative management/ treatment plan. Provide comprehensive Orthopedic care services as well as follow-up care of existing conditions. Provide Pre- and Post-Operative Orthopedic Services. Perform basic orthopedic surgical procedures at the Milo C Huempfner Green Bay HCC twice a week, with the opportunity to perform more complex cases once monthly at the Clement J Zablocki VA in Milwaukee. Conduct 3 times weekly outpatient clinics at the Green Bay HCC, with future opportunity for clinic expansion the Appleton CBOC. Work collaboratively with the Department of Orthopaedics at the Clement J Zablocki VA, for operative management and follow up of higher complexity cases. Work collaboratively with the Department of Orthopaedics at the Clement J Zablocki VA, providing sign out when necessary, for nightly and weekend call coverage. Work collaboratively with the Department of Orthopaedics at the Clement J Zablocki VA, to seek adjunct credentialing at the Medical College of Wisconsin, should there be interest in working with/ teaching residents. Document services through appropriate notes, such as History and Physical, Progress notes, Operative notes, and Discharge Summaries. Educate physicians and staff in the principles and therapy of basic and complex Orthopedic Services/Surgery. Provide patient and family education, including informed consent. Respond to patient telephone calls, informing patients of test/lab results, and renewing medication prescriptions when necessary. Adhere to safety, health, and infection control standards, regulations and work practices, as well as ergonomic standards. Attend required staff meetings, communicating up and down the chain of command, and helping prepare heads-up and issue briefs related to adverse patient outcomes. Complete indirect patient care requirements: open encounter and open consult maintenance, CPRS documentation requirements, monitoring of clinic management. Maintain involvement in matters concerning clinic productivity, relevant performance measures, Quality and Patient Safety oversight, as well as process improvements (system redesigns). Remain privileged and practicing in their specialty field. The exact privileges and procedures for a particular provider will be approved by the Professional Standards Board. Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life. Demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social sciences, and the application of their knowledge to patient care and the education of others. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting. Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.] NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. Additional Information Full time position available for fellowship trained Sports Medicine or general orthopedic surgeon in Green Bay, Wisconsin. This is a primarily outpatient surgical practice and clinic. Position is located at the Milo C. Huempfner, Green Bay HCC. This modern outpatient health care facility includes an ambulatory surgical center performing APC Basic Procedures. Position is supported by collaboration with the Clement J. Zablocki VAMC in Milwaukee, WI for inpatient care procedures. The Milo C. Huempfner Green Bay VA HCC provides primary care and specialty health services, including mental health care, dentistry and oral surgery, treatment for kidney disease, cancer care, surgery, gastroenterology, gynecology, orthopedics, and more. Orthopedics is supported by expanded radiologic services (including MRI, CT scans, and ultrasound), Prosthetics, Physical/Occupational Therapy, and PM&R. The ambulatory surgical center has 5 operating rooms capable of performing outpatient orthopedic surgical cases (APC Basic Procedures). Common surgeries would include extremity surgeries, arthroscopies, outpatient fracture fixation, and fluoroscopic procedures. Anesthesia services are provided by an experienced cRNA team, under the supervision of the Department of Anesthesia at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. At the Milo C. Huempfner Green Bay VA HCC, the surgical and clinical staff work collaboratively to facilitate a seamless transition from clinical assessment to surgery, and this is further supported through the pre-anesthesia clinic.
