About the Work Unit
This position is located in CDOT’s Region 4 Survey Unit. This unit performs field surveys of existing conditions, which is then provided to engineering as the foundation of all engineering designs; assists in the preparation of right of way (ROW) plans for all projects requiring ROW acquisition; and also performs other professional land survey services, including ROW research, property management functions, setting and maintaining project control monuments, setting monuments marking the boundary of CDOT ROW, preparing legal exhibits for real property agreements, responding to requests from customers for ROW plans and survey information and maintaining the Region’s vast ROW plans and survey control database.
About the Position
This position is in responsible charge of Professional Land Survey work within the Region 4 Survey Unit in Greeley. This position performs and manages field and office land survey functions and may coordinate survey related work with a survey consultant. This position requires the applicant to use their Professional Land Surveyor stamp on all documents pertaining to the work they are responsible for, such as Global Positioning System (GPS) Control, right of way (ROW) monumentation, legal descriptions, monument records, etc. This position also provides leadership, guidance, and training to the survey technicians within this unit and other survey positions within the Region.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Perform and/or manage office and field land surveying services from project initiation (project scoping) and control survey through final ROW monumentation;
Ensure that adequate data is obtained in the field so that property rights can be properly determined; establish both horizontal and vertical control; research various survey plats, field notes, and other documentation to aid in the collection of proper field data;
Responsible for the restoration and preservation of survey monuments associated with any given project;
Meet with consultant surveyors to coordinate the scoping (limits of the survey), calibration of equipment, and methods of surveying;
Instruct and train consultants on proper surveying processes, procedures, and computer programs to ensure that the completed survey will meet CDOT specifications;
Stay in close contact with consultants to know the status of tasks at any given time; report status to the Region Survey Coordinator on a regular basis;
Plan and coordinate GPS surveys to be used for CDOT project control and land corner ties; create Project Control Diagrams;
Certify various survey records including, but not limited to control survey diagrams, survey reports, land corner monumentation records, and survey tabulation sheets; sign and seal with the Professional Land Surveyor stamp and number prior to being filed with the appropriate repository;
Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
Primarily 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM work hours, Monday-Friday with the opportunity for a flexible schedule
Combination office environment and field work at project sites
Travel required during work hours throughout the Region for assigned projects, meetings, etc.
Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
Required to operate CDOT vehicles
Required to work in all types of weather
Required to work in mountain terrain (altitude), including climbing to some areas
Required to work near heavy traffic areas
Must be able to lift survey equipment and sand bags, up to 50 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications
Current, valid licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor from the ColoradoState Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.
OR
Current, valid licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor from a state other than Colorado. If you are qualifying with a non-Colorado PLS license, it is a condition of employment that you obtain your Colorado license within 12 months of starting.

If qualifying for this position with a Professional Land Surveyor license from a state other than Colorado, you must obtain your Colorado PLS license within 12 months of starting in this position.
A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
The exceptional applicant will be an experienced land surveyor and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;

Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
Comprehensive knowledge and experience in land surveying;
Knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting ROW plans and engineering project plans;
Demonstrated experience in identifying/resolving land survey and property ownership issues by utilizing land surveying principles and by applying State statutes and regulations pertaining to land surveying and real property;
Demonstrated experience determining efficient and effective survey methods to be used for obtaining topographic data, positions on boundary evidence, construction staking, and monumentation;

Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access), Gmail, SAP, and survey application in InRoads/MicroStation and Trimble Business Center, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
