Job Summary
A non-clinical role which provides physical, emotional, and educational support services to pregnant individuals during the prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum periods. Assists clients and their families with accessing appropriate community resources. Assists with the coordination of group support programs and provides ongoing contact. Cultural competency and shared-life experiences with client population is preferred. Must have reliable transportation and be able to drive to and from appointments.
Essential Functions
The doulas will be a part of the Maternal Infant Health Program through Corewell Health’s Healthier Communities. These are communities-based programs which are home visiting programs, not clinical programs. We work for the patient, advocating for the patient needs while partnering with our clinical team members to help bridge the gaps of communication of what is medically necessary to what is the patient desires. One of the goals of having doulas on our Maternal Infant Health Team, alongside our RN Case Managers, Social Work Case Managers, Community Health Workers, and Dietitian, is to further the work in educating our clinical staff, including physicians on the role of doulas and to address barriers/policies of all doulas supporting birthing moms at Corewell Health. This is the work our team currently provides throughout the Corewell Health system.
Participates in community events and activities that promote the awareness of doula services and its impact on birth outcomes.
Conducts person-centered face to face or telehealth visits with pregnant persons that includes promoting health literacy and knowledge, assisting with the development of a birth plan, supporting personal and cultural preferences around childbirth, providing emotional and support and encouraging self-advocacy, reinforcing practices known to promote positive outcomes such as breastfeeding, identifying and addressing social determinants of health, and coordinating referrals to community-based support services (e.g. Women, Infants and Children [WIC] program, behavioral health services, transportation, home visiting services).
Conducts person-centered face to face support during the pregnant persons’ labor and delivery experience inclusive of providing continual physical comfort measures, information, and emotional support, advocating for beneficiary needs, and being an active member of the birth team.
Conducts person-centered face to face or telehealth support during the postpartum period inclusive of education regarding newborn care, nutrition, and safety, supporting breastfeeding, providing emotional support and encouraging self-care measures, supporting beneficiary in attending recommended medical appointments, identifying and addressing social determinants of health, coordinating referrals to community-based support services (e.g. Women, Infants and Children [WIC] program, behavioral health services, transportation, home visiting services).
Communicates and collaborates with the clients and their families, program staff, and other professionals involved in the care of clients to coordinate services and to facilitate a supportive relationship between the client and their health care provider(s). Serves as a resource to program staff about situational and cultural factors impacting the client, family, and environment.
Documents services as required by Medicaid policy and also including person-centered goals regarding birth plan and breastfeeding, and periodic evaluations of goals, education, and referrals to other support programs.
Collects and documents program data and other necessary evaluation data to ensure timelines and accuracy. Discusses trends, challenges, and other issues regarding data collection with the Program Supervisor.
Someone in this role will be on-call one time per month

Qualifications
Required
High School Diploma or equivalent
Successful completion of a MDHHS Medicaid Approved Doula Certificate Program.
Medicaid Enrolled Doula: Listed of the Michigan Medicaid Doula Registry
2 years of relevant Work experience as a doula; working with Medicaid families; working with pregnant and postpartum families; working as a community health worker; working in a home visiting program for pregnant families
Knowledge and use of community resources; social, health and public agencies and services.

CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross 90 Days
