City of Grand Rapids Assistant City Attorney I in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Nature of Work The purpose of this job is to provide legal services on issues and projects of importance to the City. Depending on assigned area(s), this job may involve litigation, municipal affairs and/or ordinance enforcement. Position will involve an introductory level of autonomy and depth of knowledge, with increased skill and expertise over time. The current opening in the Department of Law involves work in general civil litigation as well as municipal law and municipal enforcement. Examples of work within the Municipal Division:
Research, investigation, interpretation of ordinances and statutes. Preparation of legal memorandum. Drafting of policies, ordinances and transactional documents. Advisement of City officials, staff, boards, committees and commissions where required. Collaboration on Department of Law projects and initiatives Examples of work in the Civil Litigation Division: Acts as trial and appellate co-counsel handling litigation duties. Assists with investigation and processing of personal injury , workers compensation, contract, civil rights and property. Assists with complex tax petitions and litigation. Collaboration on Department of Law projects and initiatives. Examples of work in the Municipal Enforcement Division: Acts as trial and co-counsel handling criminal enforcement hearings in District Court.
Minimum Training and Experience
Required Education and Experience Juris Doctorate --AND--
At least three (3) years of experience as a licensed attorney Required Licenses or Certifications Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan, or licensed in another state with the ability to become licensed within a reasonable time
