Job Description

This position is responsible for developing strategy and implementing the company’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) and Sustainability Programs. This position will lead and complete safety, environmental compliance, and sustainability efforts. This position will be responsible for establishing and coordinating health and safety standards. This position will select, develop, and evaluate personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function by performing the following duties:

  • Responsible EHS operations at the Grand Island NY site.

  • Leads strategic EHS & well-rounded initiatives or projects as an expert and project lead in collaboration with internal collaborators and customers.

  • Develops, maintains, and implements safety policies and procedures in accordance with all local, state, federal and corporate requirements. This site includes manufacturing, distribution center/warehouses, specialized labs and offices.

  • Ensures compliance with EHS and Facilities regulations and codes.

  • Acts as primary point of contact to applicable regulatory agencies and government authorities.

  • Leads the employee safety training program to include developing and delivering training curricula, and selection/evaluation of outside consultants or trainers where necessary

  • Ensures accurate management of the hazardous waste and emergency response programs

  • Reviews the procurement of chemicals and materials purchased for production, engineering, and R&D to include maintaining the library of SDS’s

  • Ensures emergency response activities are performed

  • Drives productivity and cost savings in the accumulation, collection, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste and non-hazardous waste seeking to achieving zero waste status at the site

  • Drives quality delivery, productivity and cost savings of all EHS operations

  • Establishes and leads comprehensive ergonomics programs

  • Develops and leads site EHS budget

  • Conducts site audits for compliance with company global standards

  • Leads and influences day-to-day programs such as new employee orientation and regulatory record keeping/reporting

  • Coordinates the administration of company compliance and regulatory permits. Prepares applications, interprets regulations and adapts written programs as necessary. Represents company to regulatory agencies on EHS matters

  • Reviews metrics and conduct trend analysis

  • Implements programs and strategy in line with/by Global Facilities and Global Security & Business Continuity plan (BCM)

  • Shares knowledge, skills and implements best practice across the function.

  • Supervises utilities spending and drives energy/water/gas conservation initiatives

Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in safety, environmental management, and/or sustainability engineering field.

  • Must have detailed knowledge of federal and local EHS regulations, including OSHA and EPA.

  • Requires a minimum of 10+ years of proven experience in an environmental, health, and safety, related discipline and technical/practical knowledge of EHS regulations, codes, and guidelines.

  • A minimum of 5+ years supervisory experience required.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, evaluate, and recommend controls for workplace hazards.

  • Demonstrated ability to determine training needs, coordinate and/or conduct training.

  • Leadership skills to take charge and initiate actions to inspire change.

  • Must possess the analytical qualities to make sound decisions decision, through the conceptualization and evaluation of different courses of action to meet or exceed operational goals.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required, including the ability to interact with outside regulatory agencies.

  • Showed talent with computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, and slide presentations required.

  • Technical and practical knowledge of biotechnology, research and development and/or manufacturing is highly recommended, or a willingness to quickly become proficient is required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in engineering or science a plus.

  • Professional certification: CSP, CIH, CHMM strongly recommended.

Physical Requirements:

Many duties are performed while sitting at a desk or conference room, (e.g., operating a computer, using a telephone, or writing and analyzing data and/or reports, attending meetings). In addition, walking or standing within the office area is required for conducting inspections, drills, participating in agency inspections, conducting EHS audits, assisting and may serve as an incident commander in ERT activities. Preferably able to be respirator certified and be able to wear protective equipment required during emergency response to a chemical spill. Travel may be required.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in New York is $135,000.00–$150,000.00.
