Quality Control

DEPARTMENT: Quality/Sawmill

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

  • Work in the planer/sawmill, continuously monitoring the machine centers and processes for accurate production of lumber. The goal of the Quality Control Assistant is to maintain and increase the recovery of lumber from each log.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Consistently measure and record thickness and width measurements at each machine center, according to the procedures developed
  • Perform daily manufacturing quality checks according to the procedures developed to determine if machine centers are operating at optimum level
  • Document findings, maintain records and communicate to mill personnel when lumber is off spec
  • Assist mill personnel in bringing lumber back into specification
  • Provide training to mill personnel on identifying quality issues and communicating those issues back to QC Supervisor
  • Generate reports that show performance trends on quality indicators
  • Complete production tallies, downtime tallies and daily reports as required
  • Assist supervisor in developing quality processes in other areas as needed
  • All other duties assigned by supervisor

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Attend/conduct meetings as required regarding quality issues
  • Assist other operators as necessary

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Report directly to Quality Control Supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Understand and follow oral or written instructions issued by supervisors
  • Ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time
  • Ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with body, arms, and/or legs
  • Understanding of correct lumber manufacturing processes
  • Understanding of the relationship between volume, value and recovery
  • Working knowledge of planer/sawmill machinery
  • General knowledge of optimization
  • Comfortable with basic computer skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively to other operators/supervisors
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure a machine is working properly
  • Ability to complete production tallies, downtime tallies and daily reports as required
  • Understand basic mathematical skills
  • Work well both independently and as part of a team

SAFETY

  • Follow all area/machine center specific safety regulations
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment: hardhat, safety glasses, hearing protection, etcas required
  • Do not enter restricted areas
  • Report immediately to supervisor any piece of equipment that is unsafe or functioning improperly
  • Request assistance when a task exceeds individual knowledge
  • Visually inspect equipment and area before starting/operating
  • Whenever possible, eliminate unsafe conditions as soon as possible
  • Use Standard Lockout Procedures when appropriate for machine centers
  • Use proper lifting technique by pushing, pulling and lifting with your legs and not your back
  • Never approach a saw while it is still running
  • Follow all other safety regulations as set forth by the company
