Summary:

The Radiology Staff Nurse in the Imaging Department provides care for patients undergoing a wide array of Interventional Radiology procedures. Delivers exemplary care for the patient in the pre-, intra-, and post-procedural phases of care. Works closely with Interventional Radiologists, Anesthesiologists, and Radiology Technologists to ensure safe care for the patient during intricate procedures.

The Radiology Staff Nurse provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards for the comfort and well-being of patients. Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of the patients with chronic and acute disease processes using a broad scope of knowledge and skills. Reports and is accountable to the Director.

Responsibilities:

  1. Interviews, assesses, identifies the bio-psychological condition, and determines interventions for Radiology patients. Follows nursing care plans for radiological procedures in accordance with provider orders and established policies and procedures.

  2. Administers medications as ordered per providers. Notifies providers immediately of critical changes or abnormal lab values.

  3. Assesses the patient's baseline needs and response to care using professional nursing judgment. Individualizes the plan of care based on assessment. Prioritizes information, treatment, and follow-up.

  4. Recognizes, interprets, and analyzes difficulties in patient care situations. Responds appropriately in emergency or code situations.

  5. Delegates tasks appropriately and supervises the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.

  6. Assists teammates in the delivery of nursing care and acts as a team leader as assigned.

  7. Documents nursing activities clearly and concisely including assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status.

  8. Ensures all nursing charges are completed daily.

  9. Communicates clearly and effectively with patients, families, visitors, healthcare teammates, providers, and leadership.

  10. Educates patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care.

  11. Works collaboratively and seeks out assistance or resources appropriately.

  12. Supports teammate development by acting as a preceptor and learning resource for other staff.

  13. May order supplies and medications.

  14. Is available and flexible to take call as required including weekends, evenings and holidays to ensure coverage for the area. Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements. Maintains required competencies and certifications.

  15. Actively participates in staff meetings and on committees as requested.

  16. Participates in performance improvement activities.

  17. Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, establishes high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, remains calm under pressure, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.

  18. Demonstrates appropriate interaction with and provides recommended care and services to all patients. Exhibits knowledge and basic understanding regarding the needs of neonatal, adolescent, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients, and the cultural needs of all patients.

  19. Applies knowledge of principles of standard precautions. Routinely uses PPE to avoid risk of exposure to self and others.

Education

BSN preferred. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure/Certification

• Current Registered Nurse Licensure in North Carolina required.

• Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life support certifications as required by unit or department.

• Additional certifications may be required by assigned department.

Experience

Two years of experience in Radiology, procedural or critical care nursing required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and procedures.

• Performs independently within scope of practice.

• Considerable knowledge of the procedures, material, and equipment that apply to the nursing process.

• Good interpersonal and customer service skills.

• Good organizational, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

• Proficient with MS Office and EPIC, and able to learn new software rapidly.

• Ability to stand and walk on hard surfaces for duration of shift.

Valid NC Driver’s License: No

If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
