THE OPPORTUNITY

TheDepartment of PhysicsatColorado School of Mines(Mines) welcomes applications for aTenure-Track Assistant Professor in Optical Quantum Physics. Located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Mines is a public R1 research university focused on applied science and engineering. The Physics department offers a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics, a M.S. degree in Applied Physics, and a Ph.D. degree in Physics. The department consists of 27 full-time faculty and hosts a large and thriving research program focusing on condensed matter and materials, quantum engineering, ultrafast optical and subatomic physics.

The state of Colorado has emerged as a leading hub for quantum and optical technology. A unique convergence of academic, governmental, and private sector resources in Colorado has led to a consortium dubbed “Elevate Quantum”, which has recently secured federal and state support to help lead the US quantum technology efforts. Advances are expected in quantum photonics, which involves using photons for quantum computing, communication, and sensing. Colorado's vibrant ecosystem in optical technologies, coupled with government investment and collaborations between academia and industry, has fostered a robust innovation environment. This concentration of expertise, resources, and talent has positioned Colorado at the forefront of the quantum photonics revolution, attracting leading companies and researchers to the area. The successful candidate will be highly encouraged to interact with these new resources to build a thriving international research program.

We are seeking faculty in this area to supplement our existing research in optical physics, specializing in ultrafast optical science and technologies, computational optics, metasurfaces, metamaterials, transformation optics, high-intensity ultrafast sources of photons and electrons, imaging, and optical metrology. The department also leads a program in Quantum Engineering, with world-class research on quantum computing and information. Mines has one of the nation’s first interdisciplinary graduate programs in Quantum Engineering. For this position, the candidate should have a background in Physics or a related field, and a research focus on optical quantum physics. There are several strategic areas that will broadly complement our existing program and synergistically grow the scope of optics at Mines: optical neural networks, quantum sensing and metrology, quantum photonics and single-photon technologies, cavity quantum electrodynamics (Cavity QED), quantum opto-mechanics, quantum plasmonics and nanophotonics, topological photonics, non-linear quantum optics, micro-resonator sources, and quantum devices fabrication and testing. Demonstrated competency in areas related to Machine Learning (M.L.) and/or Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) as applied to Physics is desirable but not required. Preference will be given to experimentalists but outstanding applications from theorists will also be considered.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and maintain a successful and externally funded research program that will produce scholarly publications.

  • Supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Develop and deliver high-quality undergraduate and graduate physics courses with an emphasis on quantum science, optical physics and engineering-related courses.

  • Contribute to the Department, University, and professional communities through active service.

  • Promote and contribute to an inclusive and diverse Mines community.

PAY RANGE

Mines is offering an academic year salary rate of the below range. This salary may be further supplemented during summer and winter research periods, using funds drawn from external grants or other sources.

Assistant Professor: $82,993 - $104,507

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
