Job Information
GE Vernova Auxiliary Power Design Engineer in Glasgow, United Kingdom
Job Description Summary
The North Europe Grid System Integration (GSI) team delivers a wide range of high voltage AC and DC transmission projects, including the connection of large Offshore Windfarms, and is looking for a “Low & Medium Voltage AC Auxiliary Power System Engineer” to join the team.
These large and complex projects involve the installation of a significant amount of equipment and require the design of a supporting auxiliary power network that is both efficient and resilient to ensure the overall system has the required availability.
In this role and working with the other members of the design team, you will first develop the system requirements, and then the auxiliary power network architecture, before going on to specify the equipment and other components needed for it’s realisation, and finally managing the design integration.
Grid Solutions, a GE Renewable Energy business, serves customers globally with over 13,000 employees. We provide power utilities and industries worldwide with equipment, systems and services to bring power reliably and efficiently from the point of generation to end power consumers. Grid Solutions is focused on addressing the challenges of the energy transition by enabling the safe and reliable connection of renewable and distributed energy resources to the grid. We electrify the world with advanced grid technologies and accelerate the energy transition.
Job Description
As part of this role, you will undertake the following tasks:
Lead the design of the auxiliary power supply network (Up to 11kV) on all projects undertaken and ensure that the system efficiently meets the needs of the project.
Understand the customers’ requirements, regulatory constraints and standards that need to be adhered too and ensure that they are fully considered by all stakeholders.
Develop a provisional load list and auxiliary power system architecture that meets the needs of the project.
Model the proposed system on a suitable software platform, such as Amtech Prodesign, to ensure the correct system performance, and for the purpose of equipment sizing and specification.
Ensure that the network is correctly protected and coordinated.
Present the engineering options to internal stake holders and customers in order to gain agreement and progress to the next design stage.
Create the necessary documents and reports to articulate the proposed design and it’s benefits to the Customer.
Create equipment procurement specifications in order to engage the supply chain and obtain vendor offers for the required equipment. Working with the Sourcing team review the offers and determine the best technical solution.
Develop the proposal into a practical solution and supervise the creation of the design and installation integration drawings and other documents.
Work with the mechanical, electrical and civil designers to integrate the auxiliary system design in to the overall solution and ensure that the necessary provision is made and interfaces are managed.
Engage with the Customer, as required, to articulate the proposed design and answer questions or queries that may be raised.
Working with the installation and commissioning team, develop a testing regime to ensure that the system meets it’s functional and legislative obligations.
Requirements:
To succeed in this role, you will have the following qualification and experience:
A first degree in electrical engineering. (Or equivalent experience)
More than 5 years’ experience working in a role where you are the design and delivery of auxiliary power supply networks up to 11kV, and have a strong working knowledge of the following topics:
Electrical Load Flow and Equipment Sizing
LV/MV Protection Design
LV/MV AC Distribution Equipment
LV/MV Cabling
Diesel Generators
UPS
Be a competent user of a LV/MV network modelling software application such as Amtech Prodesign (or similar)
Desired Characteristics:
The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of auxiliary system networks, and the equipment available to realise the design. You will also have a working knowledge of related standards and documents, such as BS7671, in order to understand the design constraints that need to be adhered too.
You will be confident to discuss these topics with internal stakeholders & customers and be able to propose solutions or improvements needed to create successful designs that can then be delivered.
