Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Learn more Duties: This position is located in the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service at the Garner VA Clinic. The duties and responsibilities are carried out throughout the medical center including all clinical and patient care areas involved with the service. The Supervisory Audiologist will be responsible for the supervision, administrative management, and direction of the audiology program in a unified audiology and speech-language pathology service or equivalent service-level department. They will be responsible for general or technical supervision of key clinical or training programs and overall technical and administrative oversight of audiologists depending on grade level. Provides orientation/training of medical staff. Assists in the training and supervision of students, trainees, and fellows, providing feedback on progress toward established educational goals. Keeps current with theory and practice through continuing education programs, journals and other literature, and in-service programs. Provides patient and family education including informed consent. Develops, organizes, directs, manages, supervises, controls, and implements policies and procedures in focused clinical programs. Plans, assesses, and evaluates programs to ensure proper coordination between health care delivery within the service or section and the overall delivery of health care. Makes decisions with wide latitude of control and independent judgment. Exercises supervisory responsibilities such as planning and scheduling work, assigning work to employees, accepting, amending or rejecting completed work, assuring that production and accuracy requirements are met, appraising performance and recommending performance standards and ratings, assigning delineated clinical privileges, approving leave, and effecting disciplinary measures. Uses knowledge of contemporary audiology practice. Has ability to articulate and communicate assignments, projects, problems to be solved, actionable events, and objectives, as well as advise on work methods, practices, and procedures. Has ability to coach the clinical team in the selection and application of appropriate problem solving methods and techniques. Monitors and reports on status and progress of work, evaluate program quality to ensure that methods, deadlines and quality have been met; and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities and national standards. Serves as facilitator and/or negotiator in coordinating initiatives and consensus building activities among Audiology staff and interdisciplinary team members with wide divergent backgrounds, interest, and points of view. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Doctor of Audiology (AUD) from an audiology program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) or Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). HR office staff and management officials may verify a program's accreditation from ACAE at acaeaccred.org and CAA at caa.asha.org. OR Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, the CAA in Audiology and Speech- Language Pathology of ASHA accredits only doctoral degree or AUD programs in audiology. Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Supervisory Audiologist, GS-13: Experience: At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs identified below. Skill in conflict resolution to facilitate positive working relationships between employees, team leaders, and managers. Skill in applying evidence-based practices in a professional area. Ability to analyze organizational and operational challenges to develop and implement solutions. Ability to develop the abilities and strengths of current employees. Ability to balance responsibilities, set priorities, and delegate tasks to meet multiple deadlines. Ability to analyze data to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity within the section. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grandfathering Provision: Employees in VHA in this occupation, under a permanent, appropriate, and legal placement on the effective date of the qualification standard, are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade and/or assignment held, including positive education and licensure, where applicable. For employees who do not meet all the basic or assignment specific requirements in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed, the following provisions apply: Employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level, or be changed to a lower grade within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journey level or be newly placed in supervisory or managerial positions. Employees who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. Employees retained in this occupation under this provision who subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of re entry to the occupation. Employees initially grandfathered into this occupation, who subsequently obtain additional licensure that meets all the basic or assignment specific qualification requirements of this standard must maintain the required credential as a condition of employment in the occupation. Preferred Experience: Audiology clinical practice within the Durham VAHCS. Supervisory and or leadership training program experience preferred. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires mostly periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients/residents who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on stakeholder needs.
