Job Description:

To provide intermediate-level specialized skills in the design, construction, maintenance, and repair of scientific, electronic, computer, or mechanical equipment.

Department Marketing Statement:

The University of Texas Medical Branch Police Department strives to provide protection and service in a courteous manner to the faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors of UTMB in conformance with the Regents rules and Regulations, UTMB policies, or federal, state, or local laws and ordinances. The Department also implements programs that are aimed at preserving the assets of UTMB.

Specific Job-Related Duties:

An Engineering technician maintains technical resources for the UTMB Police department, by implementing and maintaining sophisticated technical security devices and systems. Technicians provide the technical expertise to protect facilities, personnel, and classified data from potential crime, terror, and espionage threats.

  • Installs, maintains, repairs, troubleshoots, and programs a multitude of technical security systems to include, intrusion detection, video surveillance, asset protection, holdup/duress, integrated systems, vehicle arrest, and specialized Police technical equipment.

  • Perform technical surveys, system specifications, security audits and assessments.

  • Conduct technical security design evaluations based on UTMB Master specifications.

  • Plan technical support trips to off-site facilities with-in a 50-mile radius of UTMB Galveston.

  • Use sophisticated electronic test equipment.

  • Test new generation electronic test equipment.

  • Train personnel on security equipment operation.

  • Draft technical reports, equipment and or system evaluations, maintenance and orinstallation activity reports, technical field notes, trip reports and other documentation.

  • Assist in identifying security measures to improve incident response.

  • Respond to security deficiencies across multiple security platforms.

  • Coordinating incident response with VAR and customer.

  • Obtain construction permits and forms in accordance with UTMB guidelines and policies.

  • Developing technical solutions to security vulnerabilities.

  • Provide exceptional customer service.

  • Perform related duties as required.

  • Essential employee position subject to recall during significant events.

  • On-Call Rotation Required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic electronics technology, networking basics, information technology, installation / diagnostics practices and risk analysis techniques.

  • Proficient in reading and using electronic testing equipment.

  • In-depth knowledge of troubleshooting security system equipment.

  • Strong communication, customer service, and critical thinking skills.

  • Self-motivated, results driven and capable of independent thinking.

  • Technical skills in reading and interpreting building plans, schematic diagrams, electrical drawings, and performing technical surveys.

  • Basic PC knowledge and ability to perform basic IT functions.

Working Environment:

Field work in outdoor conditions, including inclement weather. Requires wear of department-issued uniforms and safety equipment. A valid driver’s license is required due to occasional travel using a department vehicle.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., ascend and descend ladders and stairs, work at extreme heights and work in confined spaces and in proximity to loud equipment.

The job is security-sensitive and will require to pass the following:

  • Five-panel drug test

Salary:

Starting Annual Salary $57,040 - $81,995
