Job Description:
The University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute (EPI) seeks a writer to join its communications and marketing team. This position covers various topics encompassing pathogenic and infectious disease research, ranging from plant pathology and animal sciences to molecular genetics and biomedical engineering. The candidate will create compelling, journalism-driven editorial content for digital platforms and print materials and develop educational material that furthers the institute’s mission of serving as a public health resource. Though a background in science is not necessary for this position, an interest in the research topics and an understanding of journalism are required.
The selected candidate will collaborate with other administration team members, subject-matter experts, and institutional stakeholders to produce quality content. Ideal skills for this role include excellent verbal, written, and editing skills, initiative and independent working, collaboration and teamwork, and strong organizational skills.
Responsibilities include:
Creating compelling research news and features, accompanied by engaging multimedia, covering EPI member research, infectious disease topics, and institutional updates.
Developing educational content for EPI digital platforms to further the institute’s goal of serving as a public health resource.
Interacting with journalists and media professionals to bolster the institute’s public relations and media relations efforts.
Producing routine email communications to keep internal audiences informed about institutional happenings.
Providing communications support for the EPI administration team and institutional leadership.
Expected Salary:
Starting range of $60,000, commensurate with experience.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with WordPress, Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office applications, as well as email marketing software such as SalesForce Marketing Cloud, and demonstrated knowledge of Associated Press Stylebook.
