Job Description:

A Post-doctoral Associate in UV Experimental Astrophysics position is available to work UV space instrumentation with Dr. Keri Hoadley in the Department of Astronomy beginning Fall 2024.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in research related to a variety of ultraviolet (UV) experimental astrophysics topics with Prof. Keri Hoadley’s UV Space Lab (HUSL) at the University of Florida (UF). HUSL engages in active research, development, testing, and qualification on cutting edge grating technologies for space-based platforms, designing/implementing novel UV suborbital and space instruments (suborbital, Pioneers, and Explorer-class), and are heavily involved in ground and space based science projects across a broad range of scientific topics, including, but not limited to: the circumgalactic and intergalactic media, the interstellar medium, planet-forming disks, star formation and massive star characteristics, and (non-)compact object mergers/collisions.

Our group seeks a qualified candidate to lead current and planned state-of-the-art technology development programs at UF. Applicants will obtain foundational training in how to lead their own research laboratories, including leading day-to-day planning and management of ongoing projects, grant writing preparation and guidance, and how to build their own, unique research programs. Applicants with experience working with astronomical instruments and/or technology are preferred, but prior experience is not required. Applicants are encouraged to show strong problem solving skills and creativity.

Minimum Requirements:

Must have PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, or other relevant space sciences. This position will be initially awarded for one year, and, contingent upon strong performance and conduct and availability of funds, may be renewed for up to three years.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience developing a (semi-)independent scientific research program with the purview of HUSL’s research expertise (and/or the expertise of the applicant).

Experience overseeing the design, fabrication, and characterization of novel UV high-dispersion blazed gratings being developed using nanofabrication technologies;

Experience participating in mission design, development, and execution for NASA Astrophysics suborbital/Pioneers mission (e.g., Aspera, SNOUT, UVIa);

Experience leading and/or support the design and optimization of UV telescopes and components (e.g., polarization modules, high-resolution spectrographs and optics) for suborbital and space platforms;
