Overview

This position is located at Fort Drum, New York.

Fort Drum is a U.S. Army military reservation and a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson County, near the western border of northern New York, United States. The population of the CDP portion of the base was 12,955 at the 2010 census. It is home to the 10th Mountain Division.

Fort Drum consists of 107,265 acres. Its mission includes command of active component units assigned to the installation, providing administrative and logistical support to tenant units, support to active and reserve units from all services in training at Fort Drum, and planning and support for the mobilization and training of almost 80,000 troops annually.

Located in the picturesque Thousand Islands Region of northern New York State, this installation is located in one of the most unique and beautiful areas of the United States. Fort Drum is located in Jefferson County, approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to our west and the Adirondack Mountains to our east. The Adirondack Mountains, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands Region are prime tourist attractions. Watertown, New York and the tri-county areas of Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence surrounding the installation are rich with history and tradition.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct evaluations of Soldiers, family members, retirees, and eligible Federal civilian employees referred for consultation.

  • Counsel patients on primary and secondary illnesses.

  • Prepare written findings and diagnoses in a detailed, clear, and concise manner.

  • Prepare treatment plans that incorporate psychological theory and counseling techniques, and goals needed to restore patients to their normal work and social environment.

  • Provide strategic interventions, motivational interviewing techniques and crisis counseling for patients and families.

  • Document case findings, diagnoses, and recommendations in a clear and concise manner.

  • Apply complex behavioral health principles to conduct comprehensive behavioral health evaluations.

Basic Requirements for Counseling Psychologist:

Degree: Two full academic years of graduate study directly related to professional work in counseling psychology, or a master's degree directly related to counseling psychology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing comprehensive evaluations to patients; and developing or implementing treatment plans; and providing individual or group professional counseling. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Licensure: A current, active, valid, unrestricted master's level counseling/psychologist license from a U.S. State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth, territory, or jurisdiction is required.

Education

Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
