BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) GIE Staff Engineer – Safety and Sustainability in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey

Job Description Summary

The Safety and Sustainability Engineer is a team member of the Global Integrated Engineering group within BDX. The Safety and Sustainability Engineer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety and sustainability internal standards and procedures to ensure that all new industrialization equipment is developed in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role requires a proactive approach to identifying potential hazards and implementing effective solutions to mitigate risks.

The Safety and Sustainability engineer will work as the subject matter expert in this area for the Global Integrated Engineering team, providing guidance and training to our engineer community, in alignment with regulations and the BDX Global Safety and Sustainability group.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with design and engineering teams to ensure new equipment is developed in compliance with International Safety Standards (ISO 45001) and local safety regulations (e.g., OSHA in the US, EU-ISO in Europe).

  • Must have technical knowledge of safety requirements that should be applied to manufacturing equipment construction and usage (structural, electrical).

  • Collaborate with design and engineering teams and Central EHS/Sustainability to ensure new equipment is developed taking into account BD’s Sustainability goals and International Environmental Safety Standards (ISO 14001) and local environmental regulations.

  • Conduct risk assessments and safety reviews for new automation projects.

  • Actively participating in the root cause analysis and countermeasure determination on equipment related incidents.

  • Participating in EHS monthly incident review calls to track incidents related to equipment design and sharing trends within the GIE organization.

  • Develop and implement safety protocols for the operation and maintenance of new equipment.

  • Participate in the testing and validation of new automation systems to ensure they are safe and compliant.

  • Collaborate with the central engineering community to promote a culture of safety and sustainability across the organization.

  • Collaborate with the BDX Global Safety and Sustainability group to ensure alignment and common approach across the organization.

  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, project reviews, incidents, and training.

  • Stay up-to-date with industry best practices and regulatory changes.

  • Develop and implement safety review templates to support industrialization equipment development.

  • Coordinate the development of equipment development safety and sustainability standards library, in accordance with international and local safety standards.

  • Participate in the investigation of accidents and incidents to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions for current and new equipment development.

  • Provide sustainability related guidance into the design and development of industrialization equipment.

  • Assess the environmental impact of new automation projects.

  • Develop and implement strategies to minimize energy consumption and waste.

  • Ensure new equipment complies with environmental regulations and sustainability standards.

  • Promote the use of sustainable materials and practices in the development of new equipment.

  • Provide safety training and education to employees.

  • Travel may be required up to 30% of the time.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related field.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in a safety engineering role.

  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other relevant safety regulations.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Certification in safety management (e.g., CSP, CIH) or Functional Safety is preferred.

  • Experience in developing and implementing sustainability initiatives.

  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and sustainability standards.

  • Familiarity with sustainable materials and practices.

  • Ability to conduct environmental impact assessments.

  • Strong commitment to promoting sustainable practices within the organization.
