Antech Diagnostics Histology Generalist (Overnight Shift) in Fountain Valley, California

This is an On-Site role based out of one of Laboratory located in Fountain Valley, CA

The Target Pay for this position is $28.80 an hour.

PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Histology Generalist performs laboratory analyses and tests. Performs the collection, prepares samples, sets up instruments, identification verification, runs tests and reads, interprets and releases results.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Diligently check/communicate via phone, email and in person with Pathologists and LABC regarding any questions and concerns, monitor the Orphaned slide file daily, reconcile “exception lists” and find missing slides for scanning

  • Scan all slides into Leica scanners and provide edits per protocol

  • Run and maintain the Staining and Cover-slipping instruments

  • Accurately scan all slides and blocks returned from pathologists at benchmark; Clinical and Anatomic.

  • Pull recut, IHC, special stain requests and other add-on requests in a timely manner including all Antrim changes to original accession number

  • Accessioning biopsy submissions under fume hood

  • Organizing TRF’s with samples on grossing trays

  • Sorting STAT and manifest samples

  • Drying leaked TRF’s per SOP and performing container transfers

  • Receiving biopsy samples from other labs and organizing as outlined above

  • Scanning of TRF’s using the IBML scanner; monitoring output to make sure there are no errors in getting these to Transcription.

  • Pull and reconcile assigned pending lists

  • Awareness of quality control and calibration.

  • Cross-train and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab.

  • Applies job skills and lab policies and procedures to complete a variety of tasks.

  • Consult with senior peers on non-complex tasks to learn through experience.

  • Accurately complete an average of 5.3 Diener cases per hour., 12 Grossing cases per hours. Load and operate the Sakura V.I.P. machines when needed

  • Identify problem and special handling cases.

  • Gross submitted tissues per SOP and related protocols with high level of quality

  • Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues.

  • Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code description that provide the Pathologist with a clear understanding of the sections taken.

  • Gross tissue for specific re-gross requests when requested in a timely manner

  • Examine specimen grossly, give code description, and make special informative notes for pathologists.

  • Use band saw to thinly cut bone tissue into representative sections.

  • Gross examination on large specimens, entire organ submission, digit amputation, jaw resection, eye enucleation, whole brain, and bones.

  • Set-up work station for Pathologist on duty.

  • Calibrate and run Quality Control on the machines and assist with daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of the machines.

  • Provide quality embedding, accurately embed an average of 60 blocks per hour, unloading VIP Tissue Processer, scan barcoded cassette in LIS for the appropriate worklist. Embed block per SOP / Protocol prioritizing stat and manifest blocks Release block in LIS. Maintain embedding station as required per SOP and accepted protocols

  • Provide quality microtomy, accurately cut an average of 37 routine blocks per hour. Effectively section paraffin embedded tissue block to micrometer thickness, float section on a water bath and mount section on a frosted end slide per SOP. Prioritize stat and manifest blocks

  • Reconcile all Antrim pending list for any work completed and release block in LIS

  • Operate Roche Benchmark special stain instrument

  • Perform manual stains as required

  • Exercises judgment in evaluating and reporting results.

  • Report any technical/QC problems to their lead tech or supervisor.

  • Reads, understands and follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures. Maintains clean and organized work area. Restocks supplies as needed.

  • Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.

  • May be asked to participate in enterprise initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • B/S in Biology or other Life Sciences. Coursework in anatomy / physiology required.

  • Minimum 6 months’ experience as Grossing Tech/Histology Tech required

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments preferred but not required.

  • Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures.

  • General science background

  • Attention to detail

  • Organized with ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Positive, can-do attitude

  • Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Extensive sitting, phone, and computer use

  • Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours

  • Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers

  • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch

  • May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 20 lbs.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Hearing ability to effectively communicate via the telephone and in person

  • Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person

  • Fluency in the English language

  • Extended hours may be needed

  • Travel up to 20%

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present

  • Work under close to moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.

  • Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments.

  • Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from department supervision.
