Job Summary and Qualifications

  • Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; following hospital and nursing standards of care set by state board of nursing, state nurse practice act, and other governing agency regulations.

  • Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.

  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.

  • Provides safe and effective care of the post-anesthesia patient, collaborating with nurse supervisors/managers, physicians, technicians, and allied health practitioners.

  • Performs and documents patient assessments and reassessments following Nursing and Departmental P/P, using appropriate techniques for data collection and analysis, at regular and indicated intervals and following ASPAN guidelines

  • Assesses for potential medication, latex, and environmental/skin allergies. Ensures appropriate precautions are enacted.

  • Applies principles of growth and development and age specific norms in the assessment process.

  • Assessment and reassessment of infants, children, and adolescents consider expected findings based on age and development status in determining possible variations; educational needs; family/guardian expectation for and involvement in care are integral to process.

  • Assessment and reassessment of older adults consider the normal physiologic changes associated with the aging process and those that may be a result of chronic, debilitated disease processes.

  • Notifies responsible practitioners of significant changes in patient condition, facilitates management of follow-up care.

  • Assesses patient comfort/anxiety level, provides support measures appropriate to the age and culture of the patient. Assesses readiness for treatment/care.

  • Utilizing data collected in the assessment and in collaboration with other health care providers, formulates a plan of care, and updates as needed to achieve the optimal patient outcome.

  • Prioritizes and performs interventions based on critical thinking and technical skills assimilated from assessment, reports and information communicated by other health care providers to achieve optimal patient outcome.

  • Ensures adherence to principles of asepsis throughout the perioperative continuum.

  • Systematically ensures documentation of physician orders and their completion.

  • Selects, applies, implement hospital approved care path, protocols, order sets.

  • Administers medications using accurate calculations against age specific guidelines.

  • Provides IV therapy.

  • Uses specialized equipment, medications, and supplies safety and effectively, with adaptations according to patient age, size and developmental need.

  • Participates in IVCS only if credentialed.

  • Applies special precautions supervising care provided to sedated patients to minimize potential for injury.

  • Assists physicians with bedside procedures according to current procedural guidelines.

  • Provides patient/family education in collaboration with the healthcare team.

  • Achieves the expected patient outcomes or revises plan of care and implementation of care based on the results of the prescribed plan of care.

  • Evaluates and records patient response to interventions (esp. pain management, safety precautions)

  • Ensures that problems arising are promptly communicated and resolved.

  • Provides accurate and complete report to incoming nursing unit staff.

  • Applies universal precautions according to potential exposure routes. Wears indicated protective barriers without supervision or reminders.

  • Demonstrates effective hand washing, performed at task appropriate intervals.

  • Maintains environmental control through constant surveillance for breaks in aseptic/sterile techniques, clean/dirty linen and trash management procedures.

  • Uses hospital approved cleaning solutions, chemicals, and procedures effectively and according to manufacturer’s recommendations for safety.

  • If indicated, performs appropriate instrument decontamination and transport.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Associate’s degree in nursing required; BSN preferred. BSN will be required within 3 years of employment

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in PACU is required. Willing to consider a minimum of one year in CCU or ICU.

  • Licenses, Registrations and/or Certifications RN license eligible to practice in the State of Texas; BLS, ACLS required from an HCA approved vendor; PALS within 90 days.

  • Professional Nursing Organization membership encouraged.

  • Certification in nursing specialty preferred.
