Washington County Department of Civil Service AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC (COUNTY) in Fort Edward, New York
Washington County Department of Public Works is currently accepting applications for an anticipated vacancy for an Automotive Mechanic.
This is skilled work involving:
* responsibility for the overhaul and repair of a wide variety of automotive equipment.
* The work requires a thorough knowledge of the trade.
* General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed, but considerable leeway is permitted in planning the details of each assignment.
* Works independently; performs related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: * Makes skilled repairs to gasoline and diesel motor equipment, including but not limited to trucks, cars, SUVs, and shop equipment; * Repairs or replaces motor pumps, fuel pumps, generators, fuel injectors, injection pumps, carburetors, shock absorbers, etc.; * Repairs or replaces hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, valve bodies, hoses, etc.; * Repairs ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches and front and rear axles; * May complete engine tear downs, rebuild/repairs as needed; * Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels; * Makes welding repairs to automotive equipment; * Greases vehicles, changes oil and oil filter; * Tunes engine, sets the timing, and makes related adjustments; * Attaches and removes snowplow blades, sanders and other auxiliary equipment; * Repairs of vehicles electrical operating systems, including wiring, motors, fuse boxes and control modules; * Uses scan tools and computer-based systems to perform repairs, diagnostics and daily work orders.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade; * Demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to heavy automotive and other mechanical equipment; * Familiarity with welding techniques; * Ability to understand wire schematics and diagrams to be able to diagnose and repair vehicle circuits and systems; * Ability to work from manuals, plans and specifications and to follow rough draft sketches and oral instructions; * Good motor skills, and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; good physical condition.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: * Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience as a skilled automotive repairman.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: * Possession of appropriate drivers license at time of appointment. * Possession of a NY State Inspection License within 6 months of appointment. * Must have own tools to be able to perform daily duties
STARTING RATE OF PAY: $23.05/hour plus excellent benefits
