Description of Work Unit

The Colorado Forest Restoration Institution ( CFRI ) is a Congressionally-authorized program within the Department of Forest & Rangeland Stewardship at Colorado State University with the mission to develop, compile, synthesize, and apply locally-relevant science-based knowledge to achieve forest restoration and wildfire mitigation goals. The geographic focus of the Institute is the State of Colorado, the U.S. Southwest, and the U.S. Intermountain West. Position Summary

This Research Associate IV position is tasked with providing leadership in the development, implementation, and growth of CFRI’s program of work that advances scientific knowledge, analysis, and application of wildland fire behavior, risk assessment, and decision support in the Rocky Mountain West and nationally. The incumbent will be responsible for leading applied wildfire decision support modeling that advances scientific knowledge, data products, and analytical methodologies in collaboration with research peers, managers, and stakeholders; partnering with CFRI senior collaborative decision support program managers to integrate advanced analytical techniques and data products into decision-making processes; and contributing to the publication of peer-reviewed journal papers and non-technical products for a diverse audience regarding wildland fire behavior, risk assessment, and decision-support.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in fire science or related field (e.g., forestry, ecology, geography) with 5+ years of experience or PhD in fire science or related field (e.g., forestry, ecology, geography) and 2+ years of experience.

  • Demonstrated experience or expertise in wildland fire science and spatial decision support in forested environments.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in spatially-explicit wildland fire behavior and risk assessment modelling in forested environments (e.g., FlamMap, FSim, Quantitative Wildfire Risk Assessment).

  • Demonstrated expertise in producing data products and applications to support forest and/or fire management decision-making.

  • Record of authorship on published peer-review journal papers.

  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication.

  • Knowledge of the relationship between forest restoration, resilience, and fire management in the Western U.S.

  • Demonstrated experience working with a diverse range of forest and fire managers and stakeholders on collaborative planning, analysis, and adaptive management projects.

  • Demonstrated experience translating scientific results to diverse audiences of managers, stakeholders, policy-makers, and the general public.

  • Demonstrated experience hiring, training, and/or overseeing personnel to contribute to project deliverables.

  • Demonstrated experience in program development and management involving complex tasks and working in collaborative settings with researchers, managers, stakeholders, and policy-makers.

  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the professional work environment.

  • Possess a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver for work travel on short notice by the start of employment.

  • Develop and sustain an applied research program recognized for its contributions to scholarship, problem-solving, and beneficial societal outcomes in the area of wildland fire science, ecology, and management.

  • Stay up-to-date on, and contribute to the advancement of, theory and analytical approaches pertaining to wildland fire behavior modeling.

  • Lead or co-author applied scientific journal papers, technical reports to managers and collaboration stakeholders, and non-technical briefing papers to policymakers and the general public.

  • Produce and disseminate data products useful to, and used by, managers and their collaborative partners to inform management decisions.

  • Present research findings at scientific conferences and practitioner-focused peer learning venues.

  • Contribute to discussions with CFRI team members and research partners about basic and applied research opportunities and approaches.

  • Develop innovative analytical tools and approaches to integrate scientific knowledge into strategic fire management planning and decision-making processes.

  • Establish and maintain partnerships with individuals and organizations involved in the development and application of spatial decision support tools to plan, prioritize, and assess accomplishments relative to forest and wildfire resilience goals.

  • Maintain communication with Colorado Forest Restoration Institute leadership and program managers to collaboratively identify, communicate, and adapt strategic goals, needs, and opportunities aligned with CFRI partners’ strategic goals, needs, and opportunities.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Develop and submit proposals and corresponding administrative paperwork as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator to secure funding for projects.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of work plans specifying tasks and timelines for completion towards project deliverables, including coordinating with other CFRI staff.

  • Complete and submit performance reports pursuant to relevant agreements.

  • Conduct necessary travel to field sites to carry out project tasks.

  • Submit expenses to WCNR Business Office in a timely manner.

  • Assist the Director and Assistant Director(s) in hiring, training, mentoring, and/or supervision of CFRI staff to conduct tasks and produce products contributing towards project deliverables.
