Description of Work Unit

The CSU Equine Reproduction Program has developed leading-edge equine reproduction techniques for the equine industry for over 45 years. Techniques such as collection of semen and artificial insemination, recovery and transfer of equine embryos, shipping cooled semen, and shipping cooled embryos are now routine in the equine industry, due in large part to the research, education, and outreach efforts of the CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory.

Position Summary

Hiring 3, 7-month Mare and Foaling Management Intern positions at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory ( ERL ).

These interns (3 total) will participate in a 7-month, non-degree, position beginning on January 6, 2025 and finishing on July 31, 2025. Interns will rotate through 3 shifts or service areas, including a defined rotational schedule of 1) Mare Service, 2) Weekend/Overnight duty, and 3) Overnight duty on a weekly basis. Hours will vary weekly but will accrue no more than 40 in a given week. Applicants should have completed a BS in Equine Sciences, Animal Sciences, or related discipline. The program is aimed preferentially for people with a sincere desire to pursue a career in the equine breeding industry.

Housing is available on site for 2 Interns on a lottery basis. Additional housing options near the Equine Reproduction Laboratory are available for any candidates electing to live offsite. There are no “on-call” responsibilities associated with theses positions and therefore, no restrictions are related to distance from the ERL .

Position Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have recently completed a BS degree in Equine Sciences, Animal Science or related discipline. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. at the time of application; the Veterinary Teaching Hospital will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with horses and ability to handle horses. Ability to perform physical tasks, including the ability to lift 50 pounds consistently. Demonstrated dedication and/or desire to work in the field of horse reproduction.

Duty/Responsibility

Equine Breeding Farm Interns will provide assistance in the Mare Service; duties will include, but are not limited to horse handling, electronic and manual record keeping, administration of medications and routine medical care of horses. Interns will assist veterinarians in examination of mares and foals, insemination of mares and collection and transfer of embryos. While on night duty, Interns will monitor late-term pregnant mares for impending foaling, notify the on-call veterinarian, and provide assistance during foaling as needed. Interns will assist with the medical care of mares and foals. Interns will assist with general laboratory functions, including, but not limited to equipment cleaning, autoclaving, laundry, reception, etc. Interns will provide assistance to undergraduate and veterinary students on rotations at the ERL or enrolled in courses with laboratory sessions at the ERL .

Interns will provide assistance with routine care of horses including administration of vaccines, dewormers and other medications, grooming and horse maintenance, provision of special feeds and medications, check horses in or out after normal hours, perform evening rounds to monitor horses living on-site and shut gates, stall doors, barn doors, etc. A complete list of duties associated with this position is available upon request.
