Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology ( MIP ) Department is comprised of over 400 individuals who share a common passion for solving some of the most important human and animal health problems today. Research programs include those related to mycobacteria, retroviruses, prions, and arthropod-borne infectious diseases, as well as the diagnostic investigation of naturally-occurring animal diseases. A leader in education, MIP provides the only microbiology undergraduate degree program in Colorado, a graduate program that provides training in a number of cutting-edge disciplines, and several specialized veterinary residency training programs.

Position Summary

The Woerman Lab is hiring a motivated individual with a strong interest in lab management for a neurodegenerative disease research lab. Research in the Woerman Lab focuses on protein misfolding in neurodegenerative disease, with specific interest in the proteins tau and alpha-synuclein. We investigate these proteins using a combination of cell and animal models. The successful candidate for this position will play an integral role in lab management, particularly with regard to animal colony management, animal care, and supporting recovery surgeries in experimental animals. In addition, the successful candidate will provide organizational and laboratory support, oversee all ordering in the lab, and assist with lab administration (e.g., protocols, financial records, etc.). The selected candidate must exhibit exceptional organization and communication skills, as well as the ability to work well with a team.

Required Job Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (or GED ), plus relevant work experience or skills.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience scheduling and assisting with surgeries and procedures, as well as maintaining appropriate documentation and records.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience establishing standard protocols and training new employees on established protocols.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience shipping fixed and frozen specimen samples in compliance with federal regulations.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience organizing and maintaining supplies, including pharmaceutical agents, in a medical facility or research laboratory.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience sterilizing and autoclaving instruments to maintain sterile equipment and tools necessary for recovery procedures.

  • Demonstrated capacity to work well in a team environment and coordinate procedures across multiple schedules.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience overseeing and maintaining federally regulated pharmaceuticals.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience maintaining financial records.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience handling and working with BSL2 samples.

  • Additional training in a biomedical certification program, such as a certified nursing assistant, or work in a biomedical profession, such as a medical scribe or nurse.

  • Demonstrated interest in working in a neurodegenerative disease research lab.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Order reagents for the laboratory, reconcile orders received; track orders and maintain records of reagents ordered along with account allocation.

  • Maintain and organize lab inventory.

  • Schedule and coordinate with vendors for preventative maintenance and work orders (e.g., instrument repairs, pipette calibration, instrument setup/install, etc.).

  • Assist with financial record keeping using KFS and communicate with MIP department administration.

  • Maintain and update lab SOPs, IBC and IACUC protocols, and all personnel records pertaining to biosafety and animal training.

  • Work with PI to train new lab members on biosafety.

  • Perform shipping and receiving of reagents to/from specialized resources and/or collaborators.

  • Supervise undergraduate hourly employees (lab assistants), and train them on general operations including refilling liquid nitrogen, scraping freezers, autoclaving, etc.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Oversee breeding colony and records for 3 different transgenic mouse models. Oversee and coordinate genotyping of offspring from each transgenic line.

  • Maintaining list of experimental needs for each mouse model and work with PI to establish prioritization of filling each experiment for all lab members.

  • Maintain all surgical records for recovery surgeries on all animals.

  • Train new lab members on all surgical techniques required for their projects and assist with recovery surgeries.

  • Work with lab members to perform neurological exams in experimental animals and assist with dissections and tissue collections as needed.
