Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. The Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology ( MIP ) Department is comprised of over 400 individuals who share a common passion for solving some of the most important human and animal health problems today. Research programs include those related to mycobacteria, retroviruses, prions, and arthropod-borne infectious diseases, as well as the diagnostic investigation of naturally-occurring animal diseases. A leader in education, MIP provides the only microbiology undergraduate degree program in Colorado, a graduate program that provides training in a number of cutting-edge disciplines, and several specialized veterinary residency training programs.

Position Summary

The Laboratory Assistant plays a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency and functionality of the laboratory environment. Key responsibilities include laboratory stocking, ensuring that all necessary supplies and materials are readily available to support ongoing research and experiments. This position also involves general laboratory cleaning, maintaining a clean and organized workspace to ensure safety and compliance with regulatory standards.

In addition to these support duties, the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for animal handling, ensuring the humane and ethical treatment of laboratory animals. The role includes performing compound dosing and weighing within both BSL2 and BSL3 laboratory settings, adhering to stringent biosafety protocols to ensure the safety of personnel and the integrity of research. The successful candidate will be required to work in BSL2 and BSL3 laboratory settings.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by start date of employment; the Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Required Job Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (or GED ), 1 or more years of completed study towards an AA, BA, or BS degree, plus relevant work experience or skills

  • The successful candidate will possess a strong work ethic, excellent organizational and communication skills, knowledge of standard molecular biology techniques, and the ability to work independently and learn new methods as a member of a large and diverse research team.

  • Willingness and ability to work in BSL3 level laboratory

  • Animal handling experience

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience in a BSL3 level laboratory

  • Experience with Kuali Financial Systems

  • Cleaning Aerosol Baskets when used and after autoclaving

  • Help with upkeeping of general-use laboratory equipment
