Description of Work Unit

The Office of International Programs ( OIP )fosters cross-cultural understanding through high-impact learning and community engagement in support of CSU’s land grant mission.

International Programs supports campus internationalization by:

  • Encouraging students, staff, and faculty to experience and understand diverse cultures and themselves through international experiences.

  • Organizing classroom-based, programmatic, and experiential activities, both on campus and abroad, to provide CSU and broader communities with meaningful international and intercultural educational experiences.

  • Promoting CSU’s unique opportunities to international audiences, offering personalized enrollment guidance and support to foster a diverse and inclusive community.

  • Providing quality English language instruction, intercultural learning experiences, and support services for those interested in personal, professional, or academic growth through a variety of innovative programs and opportunities.

  • Providing comprehensive advising, programming, and immigration services to support international students from arrival through graduation (and beyond) to ensure success in every aspect of their educational journey.

  • Providing comprehensive support for J-1 scholars and offering employment-based immigration services to support departments hiring international faculty and staff.

  • Supporting the international activities of CSU colleges, departments, and faculty by facilitating joint research initiatives, international exchanges, and other collaborative activities worldwide.

    OIP is led by the Vice Provost for International Affairs and is a team of approximately 60 staff and faculty in six units: International Student and Scholar Services ( ISSS ), the International Enrollment Center ( IEC ), Programs for Learning Academic and Community English ( PLACE ), Education Abroad (EA), the CSU Todos Santos Center, and Operations. The division is continually innovating and expanding the programs and services it offers CSU students, faculty, staff, and partners.

International Student and Scholar Services ( ISSS )is one of several units within International Programs and fosters the education and development of 2,000 international students, scholars, and faculty from over 100 countries, to enable them to achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals and objectives. ISSS team members provide advice, counseling, and advocacy on immigration, cultural, financial, academic, and personal concerns, and make appropriate referrals when necessary. Immigration services include immigration documentation and advising to nonimmigrant visa bearers at Colorado State University, as well as permanent residency processing for individuals in positions of permanent employment with the University. ISSS also supports a campus environment conducive to international education and intercultural awareness via educational, social, and cross-cultural programs for students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Position Summary

The ISSS Advisor is responsible for providing international student support in the form of individual and group advising before, during, and after pursuing a degree at CSU . The position supports international students and scholars in achieving their academic, professional, and personal goals while at the University. The ISSS Advisor will learn F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations as well as University policies, procedures, and support systems in order to provide excellent services, advice, counseling, advocacy, and referrals related to immigration, cultural, financial, academic, and personal concerns. The ISSS Advisor also serves on committees and supports a variety of office programs and activities. This is a full-time administrative professional based in Fort Collins reporting to the Associate Director for International Student Services.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Demonstrated interest in student engagement and international education

  • Ability to interpret government regulatory language

  • Experience working in an office setting

  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with a wide range of people, including culturally diverse communities

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident status in order to serve as a Designated School Official for F-1 visa purposes and as an Alternate Responsible Officer for the Exchange Visitor Program.

  • Strong commitment to the principles of diversity, inclusion and equal access

  • Demonstrated experience and training with federal immigration rules applying to F-1 and J-1 students and scholars

  • Ability to think analytically and creatively

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with students in one or more languages in addition to English

  • Experience living, studying or working across cultures or within an international setting

  • Strong computer skills, including experience in database applications

  • Experience or training in intercultural relations and adjustment

  • Experience with university academic and administrative policies and procedures

  • Capable of handling confidential matters with discretion and maintaining scrupulous attention to detail.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Advise international students on a variety of immigration matters, including maintaining legal immigration status, navigating CSU systems to maximize their University experience, document processing and cross cultural adjustment. This requires thorough knowledge of federal immigration regulations, statutes, and operating procedures of various government agencies including the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security.

  • Advise students, faculty, staff and parents on Colorado State University administrative policies and procedures as related to international students.

  • Participate in two to three diversity and inclusive advising trainings annually.

  • Serve as a Designated School Official for the F-1 student program of the Department of Homeland Security and Alternate Responsible Officer for the Department of State J-1 visa program; evaluate student immigration benefit applications and issue immigration documents for international students.

  • Stay up-to-date and fluent in immigration regulations.

  • Maintain relevant records, reports and statistics of foreign nationals working and studying at the University.

  • Contribute ideas and support on programming and activities that will help create a sense of belonging for international students at CSU .

  • Participate, along with the ISSS Programming Team, in the implementation of New International Student Orientation sessions and activities.

  • Help the ISSS Programming Team and the Fort Collins International Center in carrying out events, such as the Friday Afternoon Club, Weekend in the Mountains, excursions, outdoor activities, game nights, etc.

  • Assist the ISSS Retention Team with evolving and ongoing efforts to improve international student retention through outreach, support and activities.
