Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Position Summary

An Invasive Plants Survey and Monitoring Specialist position is located at Pohakuloa Training Area, ( PTA ), Hawaii. This position coordinates and implements natural resources actions to manage incipient and highly invasive plant species on PTA . PTA is a 133,000-acre Army training facility located on Hawaii Island at 2,000-8000 feet elevation in the saddle region between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes (about 45 minutes from Hilo and Kona). Position is contingent upon funding for continued CSU support for natural resource management on PTA .

The Invasive Plants Survey and Monitoring Specialist position is responsible for implementing incipient and target weed surveys, monitoring the status of target weeds, and controlling as necessary at Pohakuloa Training Area. The specialist conducts invasive plant roadside and field surveys; designs, plans, and implements management actions for controlling highly invasive plants; and leads field crews in field surveys and control of highly invasive target weed species. The IPSM Specialist also assists the Invasive Plants Ecologist in managing and analyzing data, preparing reports, and developing protocols and SOPs that detail procedures and methods to manage invasive plant species at PTA . The Specialist will often work alone or with the Invasive Plants Ecologist but will also lead field crews of 3-10 people. The position is primarily field work (75%) with about 25% office time.

As needed, the IPSM Specialist assists with other aspects of the botanical program, including surveying and monitoring federally listed plant species and their habitats, native plant seed collection, outplanting, removing vegetation from fuel breaks, and chemical and mechanical control of invasive species around rare and endangered plant species.

The work location is on site at PTA – routine telework is not authorized for this position.

Some relocation expenses may be reimbursable – conditions apply.

Required Job Qualifications

  • BS/BA in botany, biology, natural resource management, environmental science, or closely related natural science.

  • Experience working in the natural resources field, which included the identification and management of invasive plants.

  • Experience with chemical and mechanical control techniques for invasive plant species.

  • Experience with surveying and monitoring techniques for plants.

  • Experience with plant identification.

  • Demonstrated experience with Geographic Information Systems ( GIS ).

  • Proficient with data entry and management using computer programs.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting fieldwork on rugged terrain.

  • Experience working in a team setting.

  • Have or be able to obtain the State of Hawaii Certified Pesticide Applicator certification and maintain certification throughout employment.

  • Ability to repetitively lift 50 lbs. 100% on-site; telework not authorized.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • MS in botany, biology, environmental science, natural resource management, or related field.

  • Experience identifying and managing invasive plants in Hawaii.

  • Experience with the use of dichotomous keys.

  • Experience using a handheld GPS unit and/or a mobile data collector device to navigate in the field.

  • Proficiency in scientific/technical writing.

  • Experience with geodatabase management, queries, and map creation in ESRI .

  • Leadership and project management experience.

  • Experience operating and maintaining power equipment used in vegetation control, including line trimmers, backpack sprayers, chainsaws, etc.

  • Current or past possession of a Commercial Pesticide Applicator certification.

  • Experience working on a military installation or previous military experience.

  • Experience driving 4-wheel drive vehicles on rough roads.

  • Conduct invasive plant surveys for incipient and target weeds along roadsides, Army airfield, high use areas, construction sites, and quarries.

  • Identify plants and distinguish between native, non-native, and invasive target plants.

  • Prepare voucher specimens of unknown weeds for the PTA herbarium.

  • Lead crew members in surveying for, monitoring, and controlling incipient and established invasive plant species in priority management areas.

  • Collect accurate and consistent data on invasive plant species and control methods.

  • Control highly invasive plant species using chemical and mechanical control measures.

  • Monitor known invasive plant locations to assess treatment efficacy, re-growth, and recruitment.

  • Use GPS mobile data devices to navigate to sites, collect data, and survey flagless transects.

  • Train field staff in monitoring procedures, data collection, and invasive plant control methods.

  • Participate in occasional overnight camping at remote work sites up to 3 nights at a time.

  • Other duties in support of the botanical program as assigned by supervisor.
