Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Campus Recreation, an auxiliary unit in the Division of Student Affairs, provides wellness and healthy lifestyle oriented programs, events, and services to Colorado State University students and employees via seven programmatic areas: Student Recreation Center, Aquatics, Fitness, Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, Outdoor Program, and Climbing Wall. Eight service units – Membership Services, Business Office, Information Technology, Communications/Marketing, Facility Scheduling/Event Management, Custodial Services, Equipment Management, and Maintenance – support the program functions to provide seamless customer service to CSU students, employees, and their families. Campus Recreation facilities, programs, and services promote a sense of community, support student development through leadership and employment opportunities, and encourage the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle to a diverse University population. Campus Recreation employs 34 career staff, up to 50 part-time staff, and 300+ student staff who are committed to providing a safe, welcoming space to CSU community members from all backgrounds and fitness levels. Position Summary

The Coordinator is solely responsible for leadership, vision, and supervision for the daily operation and management of the Group Classes/Cycling/Yoga program and the Specialty Classes program, consisting of an average of 50 group/yoga/cycling class offerings and 13 Specialty Class progressive courses each semester The Coordinator is committed to promoting Campus Recreation values of inclusion, community, integrity, and development by creating an inclusive environment in department facilities and via programming to a diverse University community.

The Coordinator is solely responsible for recruitment, personnel management, training, and scheduling for an average of 50 student and temp hourly staff. This position also manages supervision of instructors of a comprehensive Fitness Instructor Training Course, involving management and delivery of course content and educational sessions, which certifies participants as Group Class Instructors.

The Coordinator is responsible for operations of the Student Recreation Center Mat Room, cycling studio, yoga studio, and two fitness studios.

The Fitness Program Coordinator assists in the supervision and operations of a comprehensive Fitness Program that serves over 20,000 participants annually, including group fitness classes, the Personal Training Program, Specialty Class Program, and Massage Therapy Program.

The Coordinator works collaboratively with other areas within the Department, Division of Student Affairs, the University, and external constituents to facilitate events, projects, and to enhance the Campus Recreation Fitness program.

Some weekend hours dependent on programmatic offerings, University calendar, area requirements, or department/university events are required.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, physical education, kinesiology, recreation administration, sport management, leisure studies, student affairs, or comparable degree

  • Two years of work experience in a fitness program

  • Experience supervising, managing, and mentoring student staff

  • Experience developing and leading educational trainings

  • Current NASM , ACSM , ACE , or AFAFA certification by anticipated start date

  • Fitness instruction experience in a fitness program in collegiate recreation

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in exercise science, physical education, kinesiology, recreation administration, sport management, leisure studies, student affairs, or comparable degree

  • Two-year 20-hr/week graduate assistantship in fitness or personal training

  • Direct personnel management experience: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining

  • Budget development and management experience

  • Experience with fitness/wellness programs in higher education

  • Instructor experience in any of the following modalities: indoor cycling, yoga, Pilates, water fitness, group fitness, dance, or martial arts

  • Experience with programming or service delivery for diverse community populations

Student/Temp Hourly Employees

  • Personnel management of 2 student hourly direct reports, comprised of a Group Class Manager and a Specialty Class Manager, who work a combined 30 hours per week.

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate 48 student/temp hourly employees who work a combined 175 hours per week

  • Serve as a mentor and role model to area student staff in relation to performance expectations, professional development, and student staff development/leadership

  • Create a student employee scheduling process to create cohesive semester schedules and allow for fast-paced staffing adjustments to ensure adequate coverage and safety/risk management operational levels

  • Analyze staffing needs while considering budget, industry standards, and any scheduled special events; decide on staffing adjustments and analyze the outcome

  • Monitor schedules for accuracy and adequate supervision, adjust scheduling process based on area needs and budget, and perform time edit processing and approval

  • Initiate/lead trainings on policies, procedures, inclusivity, customer service, risk management, emergency response, as well as promoting department leadership program, diversity trainings, and Student Development Fund opportunities

  • Develop and lead area-specific monthly staff meetings and trainings that include the following topics:

  • Modality-specific trainings in compliance with current industry guidelines and standards

  • Trainings on policies, procedures, inclusivity, customer service, risk management, leadership, supervision, professional development, etc.

  • To these groups of staff:

  • Group Class instructor staff

  • Yoga instructor staff

  • Specialty Class instructor staff

  • Manager-level Group, Specialty, and Yoga staff

  • Implement annual employee evaluations: conduct and review evaluations, identify patterns, and recommend changes to improve employment process and/or work productivity

  • Determine components and processes for student employee mentoring and recognition program(s): implement, evaluate, and make decisions on modifications

  • Support student development by educating, advising, and mentoring group, specialty, and yoga instructors on leadership, class development, customer service, and risk management

  • Monitor student employee safety certifications for compliance with stated requirements in each job description in conjunction with the Aquatics Coordinator

  • Conduct audits to evaluate student staff job knowledge and performance during work shifts and provide feedback for performance confirmation or improvement

  • Maintain current certifications in American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer, Automatic External Defibrillator, and First Aid (American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers is an approved substitute)

  • Maintain accredited group class instructor certification ( ACSM , ACE , AFAA , NSCA , NASM , etc.)

  • Serve as Campus Security Authority and complete annual training
