Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

LOCATION : Edwards Air Force Base ( EAFB ) is located in the western portion of the Mojave Desert, 100-miles northeast of Los Angeles. EAFB is the Air Force Materiel Command center of excellence for conducting and supporting research, development, and test and evaluation of aerospace systems from concept to combat. From development of the country’s first jet aircraft to the Air Force’s newest fighter, the test forces at EAFB have played a role in the development of nearly every aircraft to enter the Air Force inventory since World War II.

Position Summary

An Archaeologist position is available with the Center for Environmental Management Military Lands to provide on-site support for the Cultural Resources Management Program at Edwards Air Force Base ( EAFB ). Primary tasks include data and document collection and synthesis, data entry, field verification, GIS attribution, site record updates, and report preparation.

This position requires excellent skills in observation, documentation, and reporting; a positive attitude; strong work ethic; commitment to quality and safety; and experience collating, tracking, reviewing, and commenting on field reports conducted by others.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field.

  • Candidates must also have a minimum of 3 years of professional/post-graduate field experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. Resume should demonstrate a combination of post-graduate professional knowledge and field experience regarding application of laws and regulations, field techniques, and survey/investigation processes and procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience identifying artifacts and cultural features in the field.

  • Proficient with all aspects of archaeological research and reporting, including research design, mitigation plans, fieldwork, and report writing.

  • Have a thorough understanding of most standard computer programs, especially MS Windows OS and Office software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Previous work experience in a highly structured, hierarchical workplace with a well-defined chain-of-command.

  • Must be in good physical condition, and capable of walking several consecutive miles while carrying gear of up to 25 pounds in a hot desert environment on uneven terrain.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field, is preferred.

  • Highly qualified candidates will possess prior professional work experience in the Mojave Desert and/or Great Basin regions.

  • Meet the Secretary of Interior’s professional qualification standards in Archaeology (36 CFR , part 61), which specifies a Masters Degree and at least 1 year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level.

  • Register of Professional Archaeologist ( RPA ) certified candidates are encouraged to apply.

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work with a wide range of data.

  • Experience performing tasks under tight deadlines and managing shifting priorities

  • Excellent technical writing skills.

  • Ability to act with diplomacy and discretion at all organizational levels with excellent judgment, interpersonal, and communication skills is highly desirable.

  • Experience with GPS data collection and GIS map production, use of other GIS software and technologies (including the full suite of ESRI products such as ArcMap, ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, Collector, Survey123, etc. )

  • Demonstrated familiarity with military culture and its established lines of authority, procedures, and protocols is beneficial.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Coordinate with EAFB CRM to identify sites lacking eligibility consensus determinations.

  • Gather all necessary documentation to support eligibility recommendation for each site and prepare updated site records on DPR 523 forms.

  • Retrieve, review, scan, assemble, and curate documentation in EAFB database with appropriate citations. This shall include hard-copy and electronic records, including reports, correspondence, previous excavations and eligibility evaluations.

  • Conduct field visits when documentation is unclear and/or requires ground trothing and testing.

  • Prepare updates, when requested, to ensure eligibility documentation is complete and complies with EAFB and SHPO standards and templates.

  • Visit appropriate Information Center (ICs) to obtain reports and records for inclusion in EAFB database.

  • Track and report monthly progress.

  • Consolidate and develop Annual Progress Reports each year, and Final Project Reports at the conclusion of the project.

  • Participate in meetings with EAFB Environmental Office personnel regarding project tasks and progress.

  • Regularly and routinely communicate via in-person meetings, tele/video conferences, and email regarding all aspects of the project.

  • Technical Report (draft and final) shall contain the following for each site: discussion of methods used during fieldwork, laboratory processing, and technical analysis; map of all previous excavation units and whether or not each unit contained artifacts; discussion of site structure, including the extent of any analytic units identified and, for eligible sites, contributing versus non-contributing areas within the site and areas needing further study as applicable; discussion of chronometric data as applicable; details of the cultural materials recovered from the site, including a list of artifact collection accession and catalog numbers as applicable; data interpretation as applicable; DPR eligibility codes; DoD eligibility codes; and unequivocal NRHP eligibility recommendation.
