The Heavy Equipment Mechanic analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools. This worker operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency. The mechanic welds broken parts and structural members, may direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment, and may repair, adjust and maintain mining machinery, such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling and cutting machines, and continuous mining machines.
The Emergency Vehicle Maintenance Technician (EVT) performs difficult skilled mechanical work and repair of the fire equipment and apparatuses. The EVT assist other division and does related work as required.
Responsibilities
Diagnose mechanical problems, determines required repair procedure and performs a full range of overhaul, repair and service of Emergency Vehicle Equipment systems. Ensures quality of work and required tools and materials are to be used.
Ensures work is complete and conforms to standards and requirements IAW NFPA standards, technical manuals, state and federal DOT regulations, and local SOPs.
Emergency Vehicle Technician analyzes malfunctions and performs services on emergency vehicles such as fire trucks, ladder trucks, ARFF trucks, and other fire equipment as needed.
Troubleshoot/Repair/Rebuild fire truck pump systems to include engine and transmission diagnostics, overhaul and repair, fire (water) pump diagnostics, overhaul and repair. Performs after repair return to service and annual Pump Testing as required in accordance with NFPA Standards.
Performs diversified electrical work such as troubleshooting electrical problems with the ability to understand electrical schematics fold outs on emergency vehicle apparatuses.
Performs initial, in-process and final inspections of work orders.
Assures that equipment and supplies are utilized properly.
Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Lead mechanic.
Qualifications
EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:
Diagnostic and test equipment; multi-meters, test set, and special tools, and general hand tools.
Must own and provide your own general hand tools. A required list will be provided at the time of interview.
WORKING ENVIROMENT / PHYISCAL ACTIVITES
Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve the conduct of work in the out-of-doors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions. Work will require lifting up to 50 lbs.; stooping; climbing; prolonged standing; prolonged sitting; and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical or biological agents. Employee use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required is certain areas. Such PPE includes but is not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision and hearing protective devices. Must comply with OSHA, EPA, Fire Regulations and published Company work rules. Must be able to deploy with Military unit if required during training exercise down range or National training center. Must wear steel toe shoes at all times.
FREEDOM TO ACT: Reports to assigned Lead / Supervisor and functions somewhat independently under his /her guidance.
MINIMUM QUALIFATIONS
Education: Associate degree or Technical School graduate with Emergency
Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification to work Emergency Vehicle Equipment
maintenance.
Experience: Three to five years’ experience, in emergency equipment maintenance at the
journeyman level.
Certification: EVT F3 Fire Pumps and Accessories is the minimum requirement with F1 through F6 along with A1 through A3 preferred or the ability to obtain preferred certification in a timely manner.
ASE T1-T7 that corresponds to EVT certifications is preferred with the ideal certification level being a Level 3 Master Fire Apparatus Technician and a  Level 3 Master ARFF Technician.
CDL is required for this position.
Must possess and continuously maintain a current State of Colorado Driver's License prior
to start date or by 30 days after employment.
SECURITY CLEARANCE: Must be US Citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) to obtain a CAC. Must receive a favorable background check and drug testing results.
