Description of Work

This posting is for an Engineering Technician I position in the Roadside Environmental unit. This position will ensure that mowing, litter removal and vegetation management contracts are prepared and administered correctly. Position will provide technical guidance to the Roadside Environmental Unit crews to ensure the successful delivery of the work plan and provide prompt responses to maintenance needs. The position will also serve as a contract administrator for mowing, litter removal, and fully operated rental contracts. It also requires familiarization with reading plans, contract specifications and applicable standards, and performing necessary inspections. This position will perform a variety of office assignments using Microsoft Office, as well as making sure contractor’s invoices are correct, contracts are kept up to date and any other duties that may be assigned. Work in this position will require exposure to all types of weather conditions, as well as climbing, bending, walking, and operating equipment on uneven terrain and slopes. This position is subject to emergency callback, scheduled night work, and work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Additional Expectations:

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Safety toe shoes required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
