Role Description

We would love a digital native to come and join our Research, Development and Engineering Strategy (RD&S) and Engineering Business Operations departments (EBO) which have both now been running for just over three years.

The RD&S department is responsible for future looking things for Engineering at Boeing Defence UK. We are the main Engineering interface with Strategy and heavily support the Business Unit Chief Engineers with strategic planning and building capability. We contribute towards both company growth and ensuring that the engineering function is geared up to meet the strategic aspirations of the company.

The EBO department is responsible for collecting, analysing and managing the data relating to how the Engineering function is performing as a whole, with the overall objective of ensuring that we meet our targets.

The EBO department are accountable and / or responsible for:

  • Managing and delivering the engineering led elements of growth related projects

  • Developing the Engineering Strategy, through working closely with the BU Chief Engineers, and executing elements of this (e.g. Standing up a Digital Engineering capability)

  • Building networks with future looking teams across the Enterprise (e.g. BR&T, PW, Aerospace Xelerated) to identify technology pull through and collaboration opportunities

  • Working with our university partners

  • Collecting, analyzing and managing financial performance and data relating to resources

  • Tracking engineering function performance against targets

  • Managing Risk, Issues and Opportunity

  • Supporting Engineering Change Boards and Councils

  • Developing tools and dashboards for data analysis and management

  • Reporting out to leadership in the UK and US

  • Day to day running of the Engineering Graduate Programme

Moving forward we also have plans to work more closely with Supply Chain to support them with building the Supply Chain of the Future.

As an intern in our team you will typically get opportunity to work on one or few of the following activties:

  • Support a growth-related project

  • Support a new business campaign

  • Support the stand up of a core Engineering capability for BDUK e.g. Model Based Systems Engineering

  • Conduct market research / trade studies on capability from 3rd parties that would inform who we should work with short term and long term and what we might need to do to beat our competition

  • Contribute to Engineering strategy development

  • We work closely with DS&A (Digital Services and Analytics) and it’s highly likely that during this Grad rotation you will be working on a project that is led by them, This will enable us to get more clarity on the Engineering / DS&A interface and ways of working

  • Developing tools to improve the way we manage function data

  • Process improvements

  • Analysing Engineering Function data e.g. finance, resources

We are looking for a proactive individual who can think out of the box and populate a ‘blank sheet of paper’ through seeing the bigger picture – someone who can come with ideas when given a one liner and general direction of travel.

Being able to work in mixed teams and good communication skills are essential.

Some experience in the following areas (in no particular order) or willingness to learn about them would be great but are by no means essential:

  • Systems thinking

  • Simulation technologies

  • AI / ML

  • Model Based Systems Engineering

  • Technology Roadmapping

  • DevSecOps

  • Basic SW skills

  • Project planning

Stakeholders

Who will the intern need to work with? E.g. different functions, customer etc.

Some of the following depending on project involvement:

  • Engineering Manager for the RD&S & EBO department

  • Team – RD&S/EBO – Tech Leads and Project Engineer

  • Wider Engineering Leaders – BU Chief Engineers, Engineering Director, Department Leaders and Programme Chief Engineers

  • Other Functions e.g. DS&A, Business Development, Strategy, Supply Chain, Finance, HR

  • Business Unit Leaders

  • Wider Boeing e.g. BR&T, PWG

Knowledge to be gained

To include both technical and programme knowledge

  • Technical planning, project execution and project tracking & reporting

  • Systems Engineering approaches and processes

  • How front end of business is done

  • Depending on the exact projects that are undertaken during the placement some SME knowledge transfer from Boeing experts and 3rd parties (examples could include AI/ML, MBSE)

  • Appreciation of wider business aspects e.g. finances, business planning

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Aiming for MEng/BEng in an engineering related subject

  • Candidates should be studying for a degree in Engineering.

  • Candidates should also have excellent communication and team working skills and a proactive approach to work.

Relocation:

This position does not offer relocation. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

PLEASE NOTE: The successful candidate will be expected to undergo a Security Clearance Process, which will require 5 years uninterrupted residency in the UK prior to applying.
