Job Description
The Accountant, Intermediate oversees & prepares financial transactions such as accounts payable/receivable & credit cards. The position works closely with campus departments & university staff to analyze & prepare records/reports for funds review & tracking. This position collaborates with the Advancement data entry team to ensure accurate recognition of donor gifts. To ensure accuracy & completeness, acute attention to detail is required for financial processes, IRS tax reports, scholarships, unclaimed properties, & audit. As part of the NAU Advancement\|Foundation finance team & direct report to the Foundation Controller, this position has a deep understanding of Foundation fund transactions.
Financial Operations and Management - 35%
- Prepares/reviews/processes all disbursements for Foundation funds, including credit cards.
- Monitors to ensure donor requirements are met.
- Management & administration of Foundation scholarships.
- Develops & manages online Foundation reports & deposits.
Accounting Research and Guidance - 25%
- Performs a variety of detailed accounting assignments/analysis/calculations requiring knowledge of accounting theory & principles.
- Solves problems and recommends changes in policies and procedures in accordance with previous training and/or experience.
Customer Service and Foundation Finance Inbox - 25%
- Liaison to faculty, staff, students, donors & alumni for Foundation fund inquiries & details - such as, disbursement guidelines, special events, training.
- Applies functional knowledge to analyze & respond to matters requiring comprehensive knowledge of Foundation policies & procedures.
Financial Analysis and Reports - 10%
- Assists in balancing & reconciling of internal Foundation accounts, bank/credit card statements, and accounts payable/receivable.
- Research & files Unclaimed property returns.
- Organizes & files annual IRS reporting for 1099 & audit reports.
- Prepares reporting/support schedules for constituents and audit.
Other - 5%
- Performs other ad-hoc duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate\'s or Bachelor\'s degree in accounting or related field.
- 2-4 years of accounting experience.
- Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Accounting experience/knowledge in higher education and/or non-profit.
- Accounts Payable and Receivable experience.
- Fund Accounting experience.
- Familiar with accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct).
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge
- Working knowledge of accounting tools, procedures, processes, policies, and concepts, such as preparation of financial transactions, account reconciliations journal entries, invoicing, revenue receipts, and other financial documents.
- Knowledge of financial reporting and processes in higher education and/or non-profit.
Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Skill in writing detailed analysis of numerical computations & reports.
- Skill in computerized accounting systems & applications, such as accounting software.
Abilities
- Communicates effectively.

- Analyzes non-routine situations and anticipate issues.
