About the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS):

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) leads Indiana's emergency planning and operations, first responder training, and fire and building safety. The agency hosts state-level training exercises each year and certifies thousands of first responders. IDHS also supports the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which leads response and coordination efforts for large-magnitude incidents.

IDHS is also designated as the State Administrative Agency for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U. S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grants within Indiana. These funds provide financial and technical assistance to local governments, non-profit organizations, individuals, and families to reduce the actual or potential risk of loss of life or property across Indiana.

Role Overview:

As the Boiler & Pressure Vessel Inspector, you will make a substantial contribution based on non-routine decisions and recommendations based on agency guidelines and policy. Your work is reviewed for adherence to instructions and soundness of judgment. Problems may be discussed with supervisor staff as they occur. Actions and judgments are controlled through the application of laws, rules, regulations, standards, guidelines, policies and procedures, and state codes. You are considered a staff specialist in these areas and are expected to resolve most non-compliance findings.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

​The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Investigate accidents or failures of regulated vessels that have been reported to the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Section (BPVSS) office.

  • Investigate notices of unsafe conditions received and forward detailed reports to the BPVSS office,

  • Respond to agency requests for support in Homeland Security Emergency Response and Disaster Mitigation.

  • Complete effective inspections of regulated equipment in the assigned inspection district, including the re-inspection of the insurance industry, represented boiler & pressure vessel within their geographic inspection district.

  • Participate in conducting conformity assessments of organizations that manufacture, repair, or alter regulated equipment.

  • Interface with owners, users, manufacturers, and repairers of regulated equipment, performing the duties of an authorized inspector.

  • Complete inspections, respond to catastrophic failures of regulated equipment and assist in disaster mitigation and emergency response situations as necessary and directed.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or a High School Equivalent plus three (3) years of experience in the design, construction, operation, or inspection of power boilers and unfired pressure vessels. Substitutions can be made for a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering plus one (1) year of experience or an Associate Degree in Mechanical Technology plus two (2) years of experience.

  • Maintain a valid driver’s license.

  • Maintain knowledge of and demonstrate a high level of competence in all codes and standards adopted by the State of Indiana relative to boiler and pressure vessel regulation.

  • Ability to maintain and practice a comprehensive grasp of the methodology and tools required to complete inspections.

  • Demonstrate good organizational skills to manage an inspection territory effectively.

  • Ability to effectively use electronic communication, data retrieval, and reporting.

  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.

  • Working knowledge of database systems and MS Office applications.

    You must satisfy the following requirement to continue employment:

  • Complete the minimum required continuing education units to maintain National Board of Boiler Inspectors (NBBI) certification.

  • Maintain a valid Indiana driver’s license.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
