Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) is hiring for Firefighter Apprentices. As a member of a fire suppression, emergency medical, and life safety team, ESF Firefighter EMTs participate in a team's response to a wide range of emergencies such as:

  • fire, medical, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents

  • provide basic and advanced-level life support including initial patient assessment, administration of medical treatment, and transport

  • operate specialized equipment, apparatus, machinery, and tools

  • perform fire prevention activities as well as general station duties

Eugene Springfield Fire will be hosting a Firefighter Apprentice Informational Session at 6pm on Friday, September 13 at 1705 W Second Ave. Eugene, OR 97402.

Salary Range:

$18.59 - $30.71 hourly / $49,668.02 - $82,049.75 annually (24 hr Shift)

$23.88 - $39.46 hourly / $49,670.40 - $82,076.80 annually (40 hr)

Wages: Base wage will follow the OSFFC JATC (Oregon State Fire Fighter Council Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee) MA# 1182 Standard. In year one of the apprenticeship program, apprentices will receive 73% of Firefighter step 1. After 6 months of the apprenticeship program, apprentices will receive 73% of Firefighter step 2. In year two, apprentices will receive 80% of Firefighter step 3. If an apprentice enters year three of the apprentice program, they will receive 100% of Firefighter step 4. At no time will the apprentice wage be less than the federal or state minimum wage rate.

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following

Persons in this classification maybe assigned job duties and responsibilities similar to the characteristics or duties listed below.

General Firefighting and Emergency Response Duties- these duties will be learned throughout the apprenticeship program.

  • Responds to emergency situations and performs fire suppression activities, medical assistance and other specialized rescue activities in a team environment under direct supervision from chain of command. Works within the chain of command and follows orders, rules, policies, standard operation procedures (SOP's), safety practices, and detailed directions; makes rapid decisions as to appropriate action if required.

  • Operates diverse equipment, such as hoses, nozzles, breathing apparatus, a variety of hand tools and power equipment, saws, types of fire extinguishers, ventilation equipment, specialized rescue and extrication equipment.

  • Performs hose evolutions in the structural, wildland and wildland/urban interface environment.

  • Assists in routine maintenance and inspection of apparatus, equipment and tools.

  • Observe the preparation of pre-emergency plans and development of information resources about industrial, commercial and multiple dwelling occupancies, and other target hazards; participates in building familiarization tours.

  • Participates in fire and other emergency/rescue and special operations drills, and training; keeps up to date on methods, policies and procedures;

  • Assists in the inspection and maintenance of fire hydrants.

  • Participates in the maintenance of fire station and grounds.

  • Operates department computer systems, programs and other automation as applicable.

  • May assist in special operations at the first responder level, e.g., hazardous materials, technical rescue, and water rescue, or participate as team member.

  • Actively support and respect diversity in the workplace.

  • Performs related duties as required.

EMS Related Duties - these duties will be learned throughout the apprenticeship program.

(NOTE: The emergency medical service duties listed below are general in nature and are not a detailed description of duties authorized for each certification level.)

  • Under the direct supervision of a Paramedic, performs patient assessment and administers medical treatment, at the basic life support level once qualified.

  • Assesses injured, ill, or infirmed patients.

  • Performs lifting and moving of patients without causing additional injury.

  • Performs vehicle stabilization and extrication activities.

  • Checks and maintains medical equipment and supplies.

  • Operates various equipment such as suction units, cardiac monitor defibrillators, stretchers, medical instruments/supplies and devices, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of and ability to maintain an appropriate AHA BLS CPR certification within six (6) months of hire.

  • Possession of and ability to maintain an appropriate Oregon EMT Basic within one (1) year of hire.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age

  • Must pass a Background Investigation and Pre-Employment Physical and Psychological testing

  • Complete Fitness for Duty/NFPA 1582 Medical Physical Exam

  • Building construction and effects of fire and water on structural stability and integrity.

  • Salvage, overhaul and property conservation techniques.

  • Water distribution systems; electrical systems; alarm system; heating/ventilation systems.

  • Assigned district, including fixed water delivery systems, building structures, and sprinkler systems, topography of land, and special hazards in district.

  • Buildings, topography, and target hazards.

  • Emergency medical services practices and procedures for the level of EMS certification.

  • Specialty team operations (i.e., hazmat, water rescue, technical rescue) and how to assist teams.

  • Principles and properties of hazardous materials.

  • Operation and maintenance of firefighting/rescue apparatus and equipment.

  • Knowledge of patient assessment, initiating medical procedures and treatment and medicines; medical protocols and new medical techniques and equipment, and documenting patient condition and level of care provided.

  • Department computer systems and automation as applicable.

Skills and Abilities in:

  • Perform duties assigned at incident site under emergency and non-emergency situations.

  • Rapidly analyze problems and make decisions as to appropriate response within scope of orders from company officer.

  • Work effectively with others and as an integral part of fire suppression and emergency response team.

  • Use judgment in operating equipment within defined strategy and procedures; know how to use equipment in different situations.

  • Prepare and respond to various emergencies, maintain composure during stressful situations, and operate at traumatic incidents.

  • Determine best course of action and proper mode of response according to policies, procedures and direction, while operating within the chain of command.

  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with a diverse range of people; deal effectively with verbal and physical confrontations.

  • Understand, follow and carry out orders.

  • Be prepared to instantly respond to emergency situations.

  • Perform strenuous work under adverse conditions, such as heat, smoke, physical discomfort, confined spaces and various heights and hazardous environments.

  • Maintain composure and confront stressful situations and effects of repeated exposure to traumatic situations.

  • Maintain the personal fitness level required to adequately perform the duties of the position.

  • Operate special equipment, use resource manuals, and maintain required records.

  • Acquire required certifications and credentials issued by the Department, Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) and Oregon State Department of Health.

What to Expect from our Selection Process: Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required . Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment. Marijuana use is evaluated consistent with current state law regulations. PLEASE NOTE: Once the posting closes, the process can take 8-10 weeks to complete .

ESF: Candidates must pass a complete pre-employment physical examination prior to receiving a final offer of employment. The examination and drug test will be conducted by the City’s contracted physician and paid for by the hiring department. Candidates who receive a positive drug test will be disqualified.
