UPMC Professional Staff Nurse - Heart Institute in Erie, Pennsylvania

UPMC Hamot, a Magnet-designated hospital, is seeking a skilled and compassionate Flex Full-Time Professional Staff Nurse to join our Heart Institute Team. This RN will work collaboratively within both the inpatient and outpatient stress lab settings, partnering with other nursing staff and cardiologists to deliver exceptional care.

Position Details:

  • Job Title: Professional Staff Nurse

  • Salary: Based on qualifications and career ladder requirements. The minimum rate of pay for a non-BSN Professional Staff Nurse is $31.10 per hour.

  • Shifts: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday – Friday, 28 hours per week with availability to flex up to 40 hours per week based on department need.

Position Summary:

The Professional Staff Nurse is a key member of the care delivery team, responsible for setting standards for the level and quality of nursing care. This role requires leadership, collaboration, and a commitment to patient-centered care, while maintaining a strong focus on patient outcomes across the continuum of care. The Professional Staff Nurse will demonstrate clinical knowledge, contribute to evidence-based practice, and support the professional development of peers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Leadership: Serve as a role model in clinical expertise, teaching, specialized resource nursing, and evidence-based practice. Offer guidance and feedback to the healthcare team and contribute to nursing peer review.

  • Patient-Centered Care: Apply the nursing process to create individualized care plans, collaborate with patients and families, and ensure clear, concise communication with the entire care team.

  • Education & Mentorship: Mentor and precept nursing students, new graduates, and new hires. Foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement by sharing research, professional materials, and presenting at unit meetings.

  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Build strong working relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to ensure the best possible outcomes. Lead and participate in teams that drive improvements in patient care and workplace practices.

  • Evidence-Based Practice & Quality Improvement: Identify opportunities for quality improvement and implement evidence-based practices to enhance patient care and safety.

  • Healthy Work Environment: Promote a positive, collaborative workplace by addressing challenges, supporting work-life balance, and fostering cultural awareness and respect among colleagues.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.

  • Licensure: Current Pennsylvania RN license required.

  • Experience: Previous inpatient cardiac experience or stress lab experience is highly preferred.

  • Certifications: Current BLS and ACLS certifications are required. Additional certifications may be required based on the role and department.

  • Skills: Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for patient-centered care.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Experienced nurses with inpatient cardiac care, or previous experience in a stress lab are highly preferred

  • Education: BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) is preferred.

  • Age-Specific Care: Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately with patients of all ages served by the assigned unit, as outlined in department policies and procedures.

  • Growth and Development: Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development across the lifespan and be able to assess age-specific data and interpret the appropriate information needed to meet the patient’s individual care needs.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.

  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities required for patient care. Ability to lead others in applying the nursing process effectively.

  • Physical Requirements: Must have the physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients. Must possess mobility, visual, and manual dexterity to perform required tasks.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Licensure: Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in the state where the facility is located, or in a state covered by the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement.

  • Certification: UPMC-approved nursing certification is preferred. Certification is not required if holding a Master’s in Nursing or DNP.

  • CPR: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required based on AHA standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components. Certification must be completed within 30 days of hire.

  • Licensure Compact: If the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state is acceptable. Employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change residency to the state where the facility is located must apply for licensure in that state within 60 days of changing residency.
