UPMC Professional Staff Nurse, Endoscopy (Casual) in Erie, Pennsylvania

The Endoscopy Department at UPMC Hamot is hiring for a casual Professional Staff Nurse to join their team!

The Endoscopy Department was recognized for the second time in 2023 for its commitment to quality and safety by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience.

Overview: In this role, you will join a team that provides care for inpatients and outpatients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures. The position includes training in both preoperative and postoperative settings, with the possibility of cross-training in procedural documentation.

Objective: The Professional Staff Nurse, a Registered Nurse, is a key member of the care team responsible for setting standards and ensuring high-quality nursing care. This role involves managing patient care activities for a group of patients and their families using independent judgment, communication, and collaboration. It encompasses leadership, partnership, and supervision while fostering relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The nurse also demonstrates a commitment to the community and the nursing profession.

Responsibilities:

  • Applies adult learning principles in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff.Provides detailed teaching to guide patients and families through care transitions.

  • Supports the development of students, new staff, and colleagues; may serve as a preceptor.

  • Encourages open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous development by seeking feedback. Demonstrates accountability for professional development to improve practice and patient care.

  • Actively participates in shared governance, goal setting, and the change process.

  • Engages fully as a care team partner and assists team members as needed. Involves in efforts to enhance patient care and the professional environment.

  • Adapts to change with flexibility and supports the change process.

  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally. Understands cultural differences and fosters healthy peer relationships.

  • Balances work and personal life, models safe work hours and healthy lifestyle. Communicates safety hazards to peers and management.

  • Utilizes the nursing process within a Relationship-Based Care framework to create a healing environment.

  • Sets daily goals and plans care involving the patient holistically.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying patient care issues. Communicates effectively to other care providers and recommends changes.

  • Ensures comprehensive patient documentation to enhance caregiver communication.

  • Incorporates organizational goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction. Builds caring, compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.

  • Participates in quality improvement efforts and identifies opportunities for enhancement. Utilizes research and evidence-based practices to support clinical care improvement.

  • Discusses quality improvement opportunities at multidisciplinary rounds and influences care plans.

  • Minimum of 1 year experience required; BSN preferred.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care for patients in assigned units.

  • Understands principles of growth and development across the lifespan.

  • Assesses patient data to identify age-specific needs and provides appropriate care.

  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, staff, and patients/families.

  • Works effectively in a complex environment with multiple priorities and specialized equipment.

  • Utilizes good clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills in patient care.

  • Applies and leads others in the use of the nursing process.

  • Maintains mobility, manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 1 year of hire/transfer

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Act 34

  • UPMC approved national certification preferred.

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
