UPMC Lead Surgical Technologist in Erie, Pennsylvania

UPMC Hamot, a Magnet designated facility in Erie, PA, is hiring a Lead Surgical Technologist to join the Operating Room!

We have a 17 suite operating room that offers wide variety of specialties from Robotics, Kidney Transplants, Trauma and almost everything in between. We provide high quality care for both our elective and urgent patients from infant to geriatrics. Shifts/Hours: Our Surg. Techs work a rotating 10- or 12-hour schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage.

2+ years of experience: 2-year commitment $15,000; 3-year commitment $25,000

Job title and salary will be determined based upon qualifications and career ladder requirements.

Overview: The Lead Surgical Technologist will facilitate Surgical Technologist assignments under supervision to ensure safe and effective procedures. They assist with complex surgeries across multiple specialties, arrange sterile setups, pass instruments, and prepare supplies. Additionally, they help clean and restock the operating room, manage special trays and patient data, and ensure proper use and availability of equipment and supplies for quality patient care.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate day-to-day supervision of surgical technicians Serve as the lead on shifts to resolve questions or issues.

  • Teach skills and theoretical principles to new employees and students.

  • Assist Nurse Specialist in supervising the use of supplies and equipment for patient care and safety.

  • Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to the surgeon per policies.

  • May schedule procedures under the case scheduling process.

  • Demonstrate initiative in solving patient and technical issues to improve OR operations.

  • Liaison with Sterile Processing. Modify/revise surgeon's preference cards as needed.

  • Present one in-service training annually under the Clinician's direction.

  • Ensure a clean and safe environment by maintaining alertness to safety hazards and aseptic technique. Have Epro access and order specialty items.

  • Serve as a resource to other staff members and precept students and new employees.

  • During surgery, pass instruments, hold retractors, cut sutures, sponge or suction the site, and assist in counting sponges, needles, and instruments.

  • After surgery, assist in transferring patients to the recovery room and clean/restock the operating room.

  • Prepare patients for surgery, including washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites; may also transport patients and position them on the operating table.

  • Support cost containment in materials and equipment use. Assist the surgical team with sterile gowns and gloves.

  • Prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens for lab analysis; help apply dressings.

  • Set up the operating room before surgery, including surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions.

  • Facilitate the education of surgical techs. Participate in peer review.

  • A minimum of 4 years or more of Operating Room experience required.

  • Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital or the military.

  • Advanced knowledge of at least 3 surgical specialties.

  • Receive a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on last performance evaluation for internal candidates.

  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) OR Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC) required.

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal within 90 days of hire or transfer

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
