UPMC Data Abstractor in Erie, Pennsylvania

As a Data Abstractor with UPMC in Erie, PA, you’ll contribute to quality improvement initiatives and healthcare compliance while working with advanced electronic systems. Our full-time role, service Monday - Friday, 8:00a.m. - 4:30p.m. allows for collaboration with a supportive team to meet departmental goals. Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrates a service-oriented approach by conveying courtesy, respect, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude toward work responsibilities, ensuring high-quality service to all department customers and UPMC Health System personnel while maintaining confidentiality of patient information.

  • Analyzes and monitors electronic medical records, identifying required medical and surgical documentation through various electronic systems (e.g., MARS, Medipac, Cerner, HPF) and reporting discrepancies to alert upstream and downstream users.

  • Maintains and submits a weekly Daily Productivity Log of activities to the Coordinator or Manager, ensuring accurate tracking of data abstraction tasks.

  • Adapts to changes in the work environment and processes, prioritizing tasks with the assistance of the Data Validation Coordinator, Supervisor, Manager, or Director to ensure efficiency and productivity.

  • Reviews and edits/completes the PHC4 Error Report as directed by the Director, Manager, or Data Validation Coordinator, ensuring accuracy in reporting.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of CMS/Core Measure Specifications, AHA/GWTG's Stroke Specifications, and applicable regulations through continuous education, webinars, and glossary updates to ensure accurate data collection.

  • Adheres to department productivity standards, communicating barriers affecting expected standards and collaborating with the supervisory team to meet department abstraction goals.

  • Attends UPMC departmental and system meetings, training, and educational webinars to stay informed on relevant updates and ensure continued professional development.

  • Reviews clinical documentation to extract key data elements in accordance with CMS/Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Specifications Manual, ensuring 100% accuracy critical for VBP/Value Based Purchasing reimbursement.

  • Participates in the ongoing assessment of electronic data sources, evaluating data abstraction software performance to detect potential system issues and collaborating on improvements.

Required

  • A high school graduate with a minimum of 1-2 years of clinical or core measure abstracting or completion of a certified nurse assistant certificate program

  • A strong knowledge in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and medical terminology

  • Good written and oral communication and organizational skills

  • Must possess high degree of concentration to accurately abstract data from patient records

  • Must be detail oriented to assure accuracy of abstracted data

  • Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure in a positive team-oriented manner with diplomacy and tact

  • Computer skills of Microsoft Office applications and Internet use

Preferred

  • Cerner or any similar clinical E-record system

  • Knowledge of CMS AMI/PN/HF/SCIP/VTE/Stroke/ED/IMM/OPPS Core Measure abstraction

  • A graduate of an approved accredited Registered Health Information Technician Program (RHIT or eligible)
