Job Summary / Purpose

Reporting to the System Vice President, Hospital Medicine Operations, the System Director, Hospital Medicine Operations, under the direction of the System Vice President, Hospital Medicine Operations, directs the development and implementation of hospital medicine operational and clinical improvements for our Physician Enterprise hospital medicine programs. This position is accountable for building strong, collaborative relationships with key leaders nationally and in the markets and sites of care, and with hospitalist physicians and APPs.

The purpose of the role is to lead hospital medicine program development and operational improvements in support of efficient program operations, and clinical excellence. The chosen candidate will maximize the value of hospital medicine consistent with the CommonSpirit Health mission and strategic priorities. This work will be done under the direction of the System Vice President, Hospital Medicine Operations, and in collaboration with Physician Enterprise and market clinical and operational leadership and together with the market and site of care medical directors and market and site of care level managers and directors.

The System Director, Hospital Medicine Operations will lead the team of market and site of care hospital medicine directors and managers and as such will be jointly responsible with local leadership for the development and implementation of operational improvements that lead directly to improved clinical outcomes. For example, this role will share responsibility for:

  • development and performance of market and site of care level hospital medicine directors and managers

  • implementation and maintenance of practice standards

  • documentation improvement

  • provider compensation plan development and management

  • management of market and system hospital medicine operational reviews with hospital medicine leadership

  • consulting on the establishment of national, market and site of care level hospital medicine governance.

In all of these responsibilities, this leader is responsible for aligning initiatives with CommonSpirit Health and Physician Enterprise goals, and ensuring that current and future programs and initiatives align with CommonSpirit Health strategies, mission, vision and values.

This role will also be responsible for leading and participating in project teams. This position has joint accountability with national and local leadership for managing budgets, revenue cycle, clinical outcomes, program score cards, provider experience, patient experience, and staffing of our hospital medicine programs.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

The System DIrector, Hospital Medicine Operations, under the direction of the System Vice President, Hospital Medicine Operations and together with local and national leaders will enhance the value of our hospital medicine programs and ensure mission alignment in the following ways:

  • Program Development - Lead workgroups and initiatives that create organizational consensus for hospital medicine operational and clinical best practices, including provider and patient experience, quality and safety. The director will partner with local and national leaders and frontline staff to build and implement these standards.

  • People Development - Partner to develop subject matter expertise and leadership excellence in hospital medicine market and site of care level directors and managers. Partner with the System Vice President, Hospital Medicine Operations to do the same for market and site of care medical directors and other hospital medicine clinical leaders. Help create and implement onboarding, orientation and professional development programs for CommonSpirit Health Physician Enterprise hospitalists.

  • Financial Stewardship - Partner with local and national leaders to ensure all CommonSpirit Health Physician Enterprise hospital medicine programs have consistent budgeting and financial management processes. Monitor and partner to improve financial stewardship, revenue cycle management , and coding and documentation practices in our hospital medicine programs. Partner to ensure appropriate clinical resource utilization by hospitalist providers for improved quality and reduced cost of care.

  • Data - Together with CommonSpirit Health partners in finance, clinical IT and business intelligence, ensure that CommonSpirit Health Physician Enterprise hospital medicine programs have consistent operational, quality and financial data that is actionable for program improvement, and partner with local programs so that they can validate and understand their data and use it to improve operations.

  • Program evaluation, consulting and insourcing - Under the direction of the System Vice President, Hospital Medicine Operations, and together with market level Physician Enterprise, operations and hospital medicine leaders perform as needed in depth program consultation and evaluation in support of hospital medicine program improvement and potential program insourcing.

  • Academics -Ensure that our inpatient Internal Medicine and Family Medicine Graduate Medical Education and Undergraduate Medical Education programs collaborate to develop and share best practices for academic programs. Facilitate connections between our academic programs and leaders with our academic centers of excellence, with the CommonSpirit Health Academic Affairs Office, and with our partner medical schools.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare related discipline required

  • Master's Degree or higher in healthcare discipline required

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of clinical operations experience

  • A minimum of 5 years of healthcare leadership experience

  • Experience with quality improvement/process improvement techniques, project/program management experience, required

  • Development orientation - people and programs

  • Strong critical thinking

  • Ability to manage large, complex projects

  • Ability to summarize complex information succinctly

  • Experienced in change management processes

  • Skilled at facilitating geographically dispersed teams

  • Detail oriented

  • Financial and Quantitative Acumen

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

  • Proficiency in Google Suite of management tools

  • Previous project/program management experience required

  • Proven track record developing a team

  • High Integrity/Ethics/Trust

  • Strong ability to drive for results

  • Strong facilitator with demonstrated excellence in leading multi-disciplinary and cross-functional teams to consensus

  • Demonstrated ability to influence in a healthcare environment

Pay Range

$59.67 - $86.52 /hour
