MAIN FUNCTION:

A caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients under the supervision/direction of a registered nurse. Reports to the Director of Department to which assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Nursing Process

  1. Performs data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner focusing on physiologic, psychological, and cognitive status.**

  2. Provides care to patients under the direction or supervision of the registered professional nurse using the plan of care.**

  3. Recognizes change in patient status and communicates significant information promptly in an organized, logical and concise manner to a RN.**

  4. Implements care in a knowledgeable, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner based on plan of care.**

  5. Establishes priorities of patient care.**

Technical Skill

  1. Demonstrates competency in performing nursing skills as evidenced by positive RN evaluation.**

Patient Education

  1. Identifies patient/significant other learning needs; communicates needs to RN and follows plan(s) for teaching.**

Documentation

  1. Documents in a timely and accurate manner using designated forms**:

a. Nursing and/or medical intervention

b. Patient’s response to intervention

Patient Rights

  1. Maintains confidentiality of patient data.**

Safety

  1. Functions with an awareness of risk management, safety issues and adheres to Arnot Health and Division of Nursing policies and procedures regarding infection control.**

Emergency Situations

  1. Performs efficiently in emergency situations following established protocols; documents events appropriately.**

Knowledge Base

  1. Demonstrates knowledge base for designated patient population. Identifies own knowledge deficits and promptly seeks resources/consultation to meet these needs in order to provide safe patient care.**

Medical Administration

  1. Administers medication (including intravenous fluids) according to policy, and practices safely as evidenced by no repeated pattern of error(s).**

  1. Consistently incorporates hourly rounding into daily practice.**

  2. Treats all customers with respect.**

  3. Provides age specific appropriate care to patient according to their age groups for the particular unit to which the individual is assigned.**

  4. Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.

  5. Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer’s needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Arnot Health.

EDUCATION:

Graduate of a Practical Nursing Program registered by the New York State Education or by the licensing authority of another state.

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:

Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date. Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required in critical care units.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Appreciable physical effort required. Moving, lifting and assisting patients whose size and physical abilities can vary greatly. Some lifting, reaching and stooping. Required to be on feet much of the time.

EXPOSURE CATEGORY:

Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood and body fluid or tissue.
