Job Description

The State-Operated Specialty Care Division of the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking a Mental Health Professional with a background in Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or Behavior Analysis to provide psychotherapy/counseling and crisis assessment and de-escalation for adolescent males at the State Training School (STS) in Eldora, Iowa. The STS is a 24/7 secure juvenile facility that serves approximately 80 adjudicated male youth. Licensed or license-eligible mental health professionals are preferred for this full-time position which has the potential for a 10-hour/day, 4-day/week schedule . Evening and weekend hours (until 8:00pm) are preferred and normal business hours (8:00am – 4:30pm) will be considered.

Just outside of Ames, home of Iowa State University, STS offers a holistic therapeutic, psychiatric, academic, and vocational program in a secure setting that utilizes evidence-based practices to care for and support males, ages 12 to 18 years old who have been adjudicated delinquent. STS provides multidisciplinary treatment and comprehensive education/vocation, with the goal of successfully transitioning young men back into the community.

The primary responsibilities of this mental health professional are to provide individual, group, and family psychotherapy/counseling to a caseload of youth, complete timely documentation, assess suicide and non-suicidal self-injurious risk, help motivate and de-escalate youth, and maintain annual training, continuing education, and professional development. This work is done as part of an integrated multidisciplinary team comprised of psychiatric, medical, cottage (residential), school/vocation, skills/rehabilitative, and transition/discharge professionals, as well as the youth and their parents/guardians.

A successful candidate for this role will be proficient in:

  • Working effectively and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team.

  • Managing a diverse therapy and crisis management caseload.

  • Creating and revising measurable mental health treatment plans.

  • Providing individual, group, and family psychotherapy/counseling using evidence-based protocols.

  • Completing evidence-based suicide risk assessments.

  • Motivating and de-escalating youth in crisis.

  • Maintaining clear, thorough, and timely documentation.

  • Maintaining compliance with annual trainings, continuing education units, and addressing professional development needs for life-long learning.

  • Assisting non-clinical staff in understanding and implementing best practices to work effectively with youth.

  • Supportive teamwork, collaboration, and problem solving.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a doctorate degree in psychology, behavior analysis, or counseling.

2) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in psychology, behavior analysis, social work, or counseling, and experience equal to two years of full-time clinical work in the provision of counseling and therapy in an institutional or community mental health, intellectual disability, long-term care, or correctional program.

3) Possession of a license to practice psychology from the Iowa Board of Psychology.

4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twelve months of full-time work as a Psychologist 1.

Additional Qualification Requirements

  • Designated positions at the Glenwood and Woodward Resource Centers require certification with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board as a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst, or require such certification within a period of time after hire as determined by the appointing authority.

  • Designated positions may require licensure by the Iowa Board of Psychology Examiners, as determined by the appointing authority.
