Summary:

The Field Service Engineer - Video Services is accountable to the Video Services Supervisor and the Operations and Maintenance (OandM) Manager for designing, installing, troubleshooting and maintaining audio/visual systems and production systems.This position receives technical guidance from the Video Services Supervisor and Broadcast Engineer. Work is reviewed for compliance with accepted practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Train and mentor lower-level personnel.
  • Design, install, troubleshoot and maintain the audio/visual system used in the Armstrong Integrated Support Facility (ISF).
  • Provide audio/video support for both live and post productions.
  • Perform preventive and remedial maintenance on the equipment assigned to the Audio/Video Section.
  • Install new components and systems, as well as create and update audio/video engineering documents and diagrams. Capable of reading schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Use electronic test equipment (waveform monitor, vector scope, oscilloscope and multi meters) to troubleshoot issues.
  • Maintain, design and troubleshoot broadcast video systems to include switchers, routing and production, TV microwave vans, non-linear edit bays and associated line gear including fiber optic transmission equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair audio/video distribution, audio and video consoles, cameras, videotape recorders and playback devices.
  • Create equipment lists, rack and console conceptual audio/video and control diagrams, patch panel and custom I/O panel layouts for audio/video systems.
  • Design, install, and maintain audio/visual systems at NASA Armstrong and NASA Armstrong's off-site locations.
  • Knowledge of CDNs (Content Delivery Network) Setup and configuration.
  • Perform maintenance on multi-media interfaces required for press feeds.
  • Research and recommend technological capabilities that provide cost-effective solutions for the customer.
  • Set up and maintain mobile television vans, evaluate, calibrate, adjust and troubleshoot a wide range of broadcast equipment.
  • Perform operation systems checks. Meet customer requirements to assure proper operation and dependability of NASA Armstrong's audio/video systems.
  • Configure, operate and integrate video/audio switchers, cameras, patch panels and related equipment. Requires knowledge of non-linear editing systems. Perform operation systems checks.
  • Maintain proper documentation and drawings of Armstrong video systems per NASA and Arcata requirements.
  • Provide sustaining and developmental engineering on video and audio systems.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Associate's degree in Electronics Technology or a similar field. In lieu of the associate's degree, High School graduate or High School equivalency and completion of formal training in an accredited commercial or military electronics school. FCC General Class license or Society of Broadcast Engineering certification is desirable.At least six years of related work experience which should include a strong video and audio background.

Core Competencies:

In-depth knowledge of: Fiber optic transmission equipment, routing switchers, A/V encoders and decoders, UHD/HD cameras, VTRs, DVRs and support equipment and formats, various A/V compression schemes, electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, TV test generators, vector scopes, waveform monitors, fiber optic and multi meters. This candidate will be proficient in cable terminating and soldering.? Installation and troubleshooting major AV industry products. Experience supporting Windows and Mac platforms in an enterprise environment, with knowledge of TCP/IP protocol and LAN/WAN topologies. Knowledge of DVD, Blu-Ray, DVR and other multimedia equipment. Knowledge of troubleshooting PC issues.

General knowledge of:Component leve repairs; set up and maintenance of mobile television vans; computer networks and storage. In wall and ceiling mounted displays, projectors and projector screens. Understanding of Crestron or similar software automation systems helpful.

Ability to: Evaluate, calibrate, adjust and troubleshoot a wide range of broadcast equipment with minimal direction. Read schematics, wiring diagrams and system drawings. Use electronic test equipment. Communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Apply the principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Establish and maintain successful work relationships with those contacted in the performance of this position. Analyze and resolve problems. Work independently with little direct supervision. Meet deadlines. Work in a team environment. Perform work in an ISO compliant/certified environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for this Position:

  • Extensive experience troubleshooting electronic circuits.
  • Successful experience with complex system installations.
  • Proficiency in the Windows, Mac and Linux operating system as well as applications including Microsoft Office and Visio.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government Security Clearance.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must obtain and maintain a U.S. Air Force Flight Line driver's license.
  • Must be able to successfully complete the NASA Soldering Certification Ability to read, write and understand English.
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to multi-task.

Work Environment, Physical and Mental Demands:

Typical office work environment, prolonged sitting while using the computer and the telephone, constant use of sight abilities while reviewing documents, constant use of speech/hearing abilities for communication, constant mental alertness. Ability to use a computer to input and retrieve information and data.The position requires a significant amount of time utilizing a computer for reviewing documents, preparing reports and schedules, and responding to emails and phone calls. The ability to travel as required by the company is also necessary.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and use necessary safety equipment when required. Ability to operate heavy equipment, such as man-lifts, fork-lifts, JLG and grove lifts. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions (wind, cold and heat). Ability to climb stairs and work platforms. Ability to work extended and flexible hours including weekends.
