The Licensed Psychologist is responsible for evaluating and treating patients; participating in educational and/or research programs; performing other professional duties and implementing programs in the department.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Licensed Psychologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
Evaluates patients according to department policies/procedures and follows standards of practice for mental health disorders. Exhibits knowledge and understanding of patients' diagnoses. Administers appropriate tests and measurements. Integrates and synthesizes evaluation results, behavioral observations and information obtained from history to develop diagnostic impressions, goals and recommendations based on findings. Provides diagnosis from the Diagnostic Statistical Manual which is directly supported by evaluation findings and/or recommends educational classification as needed. Conducts follow-up and communicates findings. Integrates patients and family as team members.
Demonstrates effective treatment skills and techniques with: pediatric mental health disorders, social/emotional delays, behavioral problems, family therapy, parent training, etc. Demonstrates understanding of developmental stages and sequence. Demonstrates understanding of medical terminology as it relates to treatment priorities, precautions and contraindications. Exhibits understanding of self, transference and countertransference issues. Demonstrates understanding of similarities and differences between a medical and educational model. Uses a systematic approach to clinical decision making. Incorporates family goals into treatment planning and actively involves family in the treatment process. Addresses causal factors and sets necessary limits in response to undesirable physical or social behavior. Provides home programs to reinforce treatment objectives. Evaluates treatment effectiveness, modifying treatment according to client and family characteristics. Plans treatment transitions with an understanding of the treatment process.
Productivity will be maintained based on departmental standards. Intake appointments will be complete as directed as well as being coordinated with peers. Admissions and Discharges will be coordinated with the program supervisor to enhance and maintain standards. Length of staff and treatment planning will be consistent with standards of the department.
Communicates changes in treatment plans and follows procedures to obtain appropriate approvals/authorizations. Records charges based on services provided and supported by documentation and submits in a timely manner. Collects and records accurate data/information in a manner that reflects an understanding of reimbursement systems and their impact on patient care. Completes administrative forms as required.
Clinical judgment and skills are monitored through participation in team meetings/case presentations. Supervision and chart review are additional ways of measuring skill sets.
Provides effective individual and group treatment as appropriate; provides effective family counseling as indicated; demonstrates proficiency with crisis interventions; provides other interventions as appropriate in accordance with accepted clinical practice and standards
Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Graduate of an accredited Doctoral degree curriculum in Psychology.
Minimum of 2 years professional experience providing psychological services to patients in a medical setting, including multidisciplinary rehabilitation.
Ability to work autonomously; maintain documentation; and communicate effectively.
Proficiency with medical psychotherapy, biofeedback and/or behavioral medicine.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Outpatient mental health experience.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Psychologist License.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
- NJDOE School Psychologist Certification.
