Fairview Health Services Assistant Head Nurse - OR in Edina, Minnesota

Overview

The Assistant Head Nurse assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care to meet the mission and goals of quality care and service excellence for assigned population(s). (M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina MN) will support the following services: da Vinci robotics, Gynecologic, ENT, Urologic, Eye, and Dental surgery service lines.

Assists Nurse Manager with planning, directing, implementing and evaluating orientation and educational activities for assigned unit(s). Supervises nursing personnel and monitors daily staffing in absence of Nurse Manager. Serves as role model in patient care delivery, leadership, and quality assurance monitoring. Is able to perform all duties of registered nurse.

Responsibilities Job Description

Assists the Nurse Manager in planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of orientation and educational programs for unit using an outcome based approach.

  • Assists Nurse Manager, CNS and Organizational Learning Specialist with development and implementation of orientation plans and inservice education activities.

  • Acts as a resource for and/or preceptor for new personnel during orientation periods.

  • Acts as a resource nurse and role model for staff.

  • Provide regular feedback, in an objective, positive manner to orientees regarding performance during orientation period.

Assesses patient needs and identifies expected nursing outcomes.

  • Involves the patient, family and other health team members in gathering data.

  • Uses an ongoing, systematic process to gather relevant data from patient and family.

  • Analyzes data to identify potential risks, prioritize needs and determine priority problems.

  • Identifies outcomes that are age appropriate, culturally appropriate, realistic and attainable.

  • Validates these with patient, family and other health team members.

  • Documents data and identified outcomes.

Develops an individualized nursing plan of care.

  • Collaborates with patient, family and other health team members to develop a nursing plan of care

  • Develops an individualized plan based on age, social and cultural considerations, condition and other relevant needs.

  • Determines nursing interventions based on identified needs.

  • Identifies interdisciplinary resources needed to assist in implementing the nursing plan of care.

  • Prioritizes interventions based on patient acuity, available resources, and patient/family preferences and needs.

  • Documents and updates the plan of care to assure continuity throughout the continuum of care.

Implements nursing interventions based on the plan of care.

  • Provides care according to the plan, and in accordance with all relevant policies, procedures and nursing practice guidelines.

  • Coordinates nursing care with the care of all other health team members.

  • Initiates age and culturally appropriate measures to meet patient needs and achieve expected outcomes.

  • Initiates patient/family teaching as appropriate to age, readiness to learn and available resources.

  • Collaborates, consults, or makes referrals if unable to perform safely and independently.

  • Delegates direct and indirect patient care activities to appropriate personnel based on needs, condition, potential for risk/harm, complexity of the skill and predictability of the outcome.

  • Assures all actions are based on scientific, ethical or ecological principles; proven effectiveness; past experience; practice standards; patient/family requests and values; or, legal parameters.

  • Documents interventions according to practice guidelines.

  • Responds to emergent situations.

Evaluates care and patient response to interventions and expected outcomes.

  • Systematically and continuously evaluates patient’s response to interventions.

  • Modifies the interventions based on patient response and changing patient condition.

  • Involves the patient, family and other health team members in evaluating care.

  • Uses ongoing assessment data to revise patient needs; priority problems, nursing outcomes and the plan of care.

Uses communication strategies to achieve desirable outcomes.

  • Communicates verbal and written information in a clear, concise, accurate, and timely manner.

  • Uses communication strategies appropriate to patient/family needs for information, education, and support.

  • Communicates effectively with all members of the health care team.

Functions successfully in a supervisory/leadership role for assigned unit/population.

  • Demonstrates leadership and decision making skills consistent with professional nursing and applicable policies and procedures.

  • Makes appropriate patient care assignments to all unit personnel as assessed by Nurse Manager or Administrative Nursing Supervisor.

  • Assures unit shift duties are completed in a timely manner and reports any concerns to Nurse Manager.

  • Functions effectively in emergency situations or difficult patient/family/staff situations.

Creates an environment that advances evidence-based practice

  • Promotes a culture that encourages the staff to incorporate data and information into practice that will improve care and enhance patient outcomes.

  • Uses management evidence to make decisions regarding a health work environment, resource allocation, staffing and patient and employee satisfaction.

  • Facilitates/supports two or more activities on the unit that reflect implementation of evidence-based practice (e.g. presentations, research studies, projects, journal club, membership into hospital or unit based nursing practice councils, research council/subcommittees).

  • Identifies two or more activities where s/he used management evidence-based knowledge to guide decision-making.

Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level of population served.

  • Partners with patient/care-giver in care/decision making.

  • Communicates in a respectful manner.

  • Ensures a safe, secure environment.

  • Individualizes plan of care to meet patient needs.

  • Modifies clinical interventions based on population served.

  • Provides patient education based on an assessment of learning needs of patient/care-giver.

Additional:

  • Managing day to day supply, equipment, and physician needs for services listed.

  • Working closely with surgeons, charge nurses, management, and assistant head nurses in other service areas.

  • Continuous involvement with special projects and department quality improvements.

  • Assists in the coordination of OR orientation and staff education activities and communicating with clinical educator.

  • Attending committee and department meetings.

  • Assess day to day plan and utilization of staff to meet the needs of patients, physicians, and team.

  • Work in patient care - RN role as needed.

  • Acting as a preceptor and/or role model.

  • Schedule could include holiday, weekend, and call rotations. Otherwise M-F day/eve shifts.

Qualifications

Required Qualification:

  • MN RN License.

  • BLS for Health Care Providers

  • A minimum of two years current RN OR experience in an applicable service line.

  • BSN or pending completion of a BSN.

Preferred Qualification:

  • CNOR

  • Experience in da Vinci robotics, gynecologic, ENT, urology, eye and dental surgery.
