Position Summary

University Advising is home to any student that begins at MSU interested in exploring majors, as well as a resource for all students who seek additional academic exploration opportunities that reside within one of our 14 undergraduate colleges, with a strategic focus on holistic and intrusive advising for first- and second-year explorers.

The Director of University Advising is a full-time, in-person position that reports to the Assistant Dean of University Advising. This position leads the programmatic advising efforts of the University Advising Leadership Team and supervises the University Advising Associate Directors, each of whom are assigned to a designated academic interest area: currently (1) Business & Innovation, (2) Public Service, Arts & Culture, Communication, Education, and Social Sciences, (3) Agriculture, Environment and STEM and (4) Health Sciences.

Supervisory duties include hiring and onboarding/training with tiered training practices with Advising Unit Associate Directors and Advisors based on university policies, advising unit procedures, and technological systems related to academic advisement. The Director will provide daily leadership to and regularly evaluate the Associate Directors and their advisor team relationships, providing opportunities for growth and professional development and identifying and remediating barriers to ensure a supportive, cohesive advising unit, while cultivating a diverse academic advising community.   

As a member of the University Advising Leadership Team, the Director will review, interpret, and make decisions based on university policies and will represent the Unit on the University Advising Leadership (UAL) committee. The Director will also work in tandem with the Director of Professional and Leadership Development Initiatives to achieve consistent onboarding experiences.

The Director will be responsible for evaluating and supporting exploratory academic programs and the progress of undergraduate students to ensure students learn, thrive, and graduate from MSU. This role will participate on committees within the Office of Undergraduate Education, university-wide, and as designated by a supervisor. This Director will perform advanced-level academic advisement functions such as escalated student interactions and interpretation and implementation of university policies and procedures. The Director must use professional judgement to make decisions about undergraduate student academic standing. The Director will maintain connections to national advising and experiential learning organizations to advance best practices at MSU in those areas, including presenting at conferences and engaging in related scholarly work.

Additional duties will include, but are not limited to, managing Academic Dishonesty Report issues with students and responding to and referring students to other MSU units when necessary to aid with educational, career, and personal concerns.

Required Degree

Masters

Minimum Requirements

Master's degree and 5-7 years of supervisory/management experience; or a combination of training and advising experience
