Michigan State University(MSU) Research Associate-Fixed Term in East Lansing, Michigan

Position Summary

One research associate (post-doc) position is available in the lab of Dr. Tommy Vo lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University, East Lansing campus. The position is available as early as August 1, 2023 and is initially for one year with the possibility of extension depending on satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. This research position is to develop new biochemical methods for high-throughput in vivo mapping of localized protein interactomes in the fission yeast S. pombe. The work will employ genetic, genomic, molecular, microscopic and biochemical approaches to understand how proteins engage with different complexes within the cell. Because Michigan State has an enormous undergraduate population of 40,000, there will also be numerous opportunities for the associate to engage in teaching/mentoring of new scientists. Furthermore, the associate will be strongly supported to develop grant writing skills. The research associate would ideally be a recent Ph.D graduate at the time of hire and will be expected to commit full-time (100%) to research. The associate will also be expected to first- or co-author on publications and to contribute to preparation of grant proposals during the appointment. Overall, the associate can expect to develop excellence in three key areas: research, mentoring, and scientific communication.

Duties:

Design and conduct experimental research activities in the laboratory that is related to his/her main project, which the research associate is expected to be a lead-author lead on

Contribute to other ongoing research projects in the lab whereby the research associate might potentially be a co-first or middle author

Contribute to overall general laboratory maintenance and upkeep

Contribute to maintaining a respectful, collegial, and professional work environment Maintain a detailed and thorough laboratory notebook

Independently conduct routine literature readings and analyses that are most relevant to the research interests of the research associate and the lab

Draft review and/or research article manuscripts Search for and apply to appropriate postdoctoral awards/fellowships

Attend and present (verbally and/or written) at internal lab meetings, journal clubs, and conferences (local, national, and international)

Assist in mentoring junior scientists in the lab

Required Degree

Doctorate -Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetic

Minimum Requirements

PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Genomics or related field

Proficiency in yeast manipulations, DNA cloning, and protein purification

Expertise in yeast genetic, molecular, and biochemical experimental techniques

Desired Qualifications

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in the English language;

Self-driven with strong motivation to lead, until completion, of a primary project;

Team work and ability to mentor undergraduate project-assistants; Promptness and high organizational skills;

Work-place professionalism

Be goal-orientated and willing to work outside typical M-F, 9am -5pm work hours as appropriate to ensure timely completion of experiments

Experience in microscopy and genomics/transcriptomics (experimental and/or bioinformatics)
