Position Summary

The position is funded by a USDA grant to study how transportation affects honey bee physiology, behavior and gene expressions. The incumbent will conduct research independently on how transportation (real or mocked) and sleep deprivation could affect honey bee's resistance to Nosema ceranae, detoxification enzymes and their sensitivity to insecticides.

The position is for one year and renewable for a second year pending satisfactory performance.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Entomology or related field

Minimum Requirements

Experience with quantitative PCR (extraction of RNA, cDNA synthesis, and real time PCR use and calculations. Honey bee experience (management of colonies). Experience with RNA interference. Determining toxicity of pesticides in honey bees by measuring LC50 or LD50.

A valid vehicle operator's license is required.

Desired Qualifications

Extensive experience with honey bees and beekeeping, including honey bee colony management, varroa mite control and sampling from honey bee colonies. Experience with Nosema ceranae (spore extraction, purification, amplification and inoculation to honey bees) a plus. Experience in measuring activities of various enzymes in the honey bee system. Familiarity with common statistical methods, and preparation of high-quality illustrations, and excellent writing skills to prepare materials for publications.

Must be able to life weight of 50 lbs (weight of a full honey super), no history of allergic reactions to insect stings, especially to honey bee stings.
