Position Summary

Operates Cardiac Ultrasound equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of patients and performs ultrasound examinations at the direction of providers at the Heart & Vascular Center. The Registered Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for patient care performing 2D-M-Mode and Doppler Echocardiograms, and Stress Echoes. The candidate will fulfill the objective(s) as put forth by the Heart & Vascular division of MSU Health Care Inc.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Verifies patient identity prior to the examination, reviews the patient chart and history form, eases patient apprehension by thoroughly explaining the procedure and answering questions.

  • Performs 2D-M-Mode and Doppler Echocardiograms and Stress Echos.

  • Completes all documentation in the EMR.

  • Reviews each examination for technical accuracy, recognizes significant Cardiac conditions which require immediate intervention. 

  • Obtains necessary supplies in order to ensure that examination rooms are stocked with the necessary materials.     

  • Continuing education for Registered Cardiac Sonographer.

  • Maintains BCLS Certification.

  • Establish and maintain communications with providers, lab, and other necessary departments.

  • Assist with other duties in clinic as directed by Supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical, vocational or business school in Radiologic Technology or Ultrasonography; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in ultrasound examinations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. May require certification in a specialty area.

Desired Qualifications

Registered by ARDMS or CCI, RDCS. If non-registered, tech must be registered within one year of hire date.

Current RVT Certification (Registered Vascular Technologist)

The job requires significant physical effort and involves lifting and positioning patients and/or viewing a VDT screen more than 75% of the time.

Summary of Health Risks

Exposure to human blood, serum, and other body fluids; and materials covered under Universal Precautions; TB risk or work within three (3) feet of patients in a health care setting; wear a respirator.
