Position Summary(Basic Job Function)
This is a temporary position.
Drives a passenger bus transporting students, faculty, staff, and visitors on and off campus in regularly scheduled and charted runs.
Unit Position Summary
This position will drive a Commercial Motor Vehicle passenger bus over 26,001 GVWR on chartered runs in compliance with appropriate university, city, state, and federal traffic ordinances and laws as well as in accordance with road and weather conditions; will be responsible for pre- and post- trip inspections as required by FMCSA; fill out related inspection documents. Checks mechanical and safety items such as lights, mirrors, tires, brakes, and wipers before starting to ensure safe bus operation; regulate heating, lighting, and ventilating equipment of bus for comfort of passengers; and checks fuel, oil, battery, DEF, and water levels and refills as necessary. The position will also confer with bus group leader and designated chartering party coordinator for itinerary details, changes resulting in delays, alternate routing, and related matters and report mechanical breakdowns, malfunctioning equipment, delays, or accidents to appropriate personnel requesting advice or assistance as necessary. The position will maintain a clean and orderly condition of the bus during scheduled runs; wash buses, cars, related vehicles and clean work & storage areas. Desired Qualifications
Six months of satisfactory experience driving a Commercial Motor Vehicle passenger bus of 26,001 GVWR or greater with an air brake system; Casual (0-1 year) knowledge of diesel bus operating methods and procedures; Casual (0-1 year) knowledge of diesel bus mechanical functioning and maintenance; Willingness to work flexible hours during split run or charter operations; Applicant must have a good driving record and submit their operator's license number on their application form for a motor vehicle record check; Working (1-3 years) knowledge of other service area methods and procedures is desirable; Possession of a valid State of Michigan vehicle operators license with CDL and P endorsement; can not have air brake restriction. Must drive a University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.
Six months of satisfactory experience as a bus driver or equivalent experience; working knowledge of a charter bus operation, including experience following itinerary details and GPS use; casual knowledge of diesel bus operating methods; exceptional customer service and communication skills; understands Federal Motor Carrier rules as they apply to a Commercial Motor Vehicle passenger bus operation. A creative and innovative lifelong learner with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population; able to problem solve within a collaborative team environment; ability to understand different perspectives while utilizing expert knowledge of the technical operations of the job.
